A craft beer fan couple from Tokyo, going to meet a friend in SF for dinner. We'd love to go to a restaurant that has good food (not only pub food) and some good draft west coast beers. Do you know any nice place that not far (in 10 mins by taxi) from SF caltrain station? (it should be not dangerous area) Can't ask my friend since she's not really into craft beers, so I need your help!
I'm going to give you a few suggestions, but keep in mind that traffic can turn a 10 minute taxi ride into a 45 minute one depending on when your trip is. And, strangely enough, SF is sorely lacking in spots with fine dining and a good selection of draft West Coast beer. We have more spots with West Coast beer serving upscale pub food, which I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for. We also have some nice restaurants with a small but nicely curated selection of draft beer. And, honestly, we really don't have dangerous areas in SF, just places that look dangerous. Check these spots out, see if anything looks like something that interests you. I think this is a good place to start. This is definitely your best bet, and if I could only recommend one spot, it would be this: http://monkskettle.com/ The downside is that there is often a wait, it can get very crowded and no reservations are taken. If you are pressed for time, this is a gamble, so have a backup plan nearby. Also, maybe these http://www.barcrudo.com/ http://www.hogandrocks.com/ http://www.fatangelsf.com/ http://www.urbantavernsf.com/ http://www.darkhorseinn.com/ http://blueprint-sf.com/ http://anchorandhopesf.com/ Also, this is not what you asked for, but may I suggest http://mikkellerbar.com/
+1 for Monk's Kettle. Also, it's been a few years, but I recall the food here was very good: http://magnoliapub.com/menusnew.html
This place is having a Beer Dinner with Almanac tomorrow. I've never been but it looks good. http://stonesthrowsf.com/ http://www.almanacbeer.com/events/
Actually, Abbot's Cellar (Monk's Kettle's sister restaurant) might be an even better choice--"finer" food, arguably better taps, and they take reservations.
Seconding the Abbot's Cellar. Legit beer-centric fine dining. Takes reservations and you will not be let down
I did not include Abbot's Cellar as OP requested West Coast on draft and they have an international focus, but is also an excellent spot. In review, yeah, definitely meets his criteria. I did not include Magnolia Dogpatch as BBQ doesn't sound like the food the OP wanted and does not have much of a selection of different breweries (which is why I didn't mention any breweries). But, damn, I love that place!! I've recently gotten into the locally sourced and made meats and already love Magnolia brews, that place is delicious/dangerous for me!
Smokestack has as close-to-legit Texas BBQ as you'll find in SF . . . I lived in Austin a few years and got spoiled/jaded by the real thing. Here in L.A., we now have Horse Thief BBQ, which is even closer to the real thing.
Awesome, good to know! As a native and lifelong resident Californian, I barely know shit about the difference between good, great and amazing BBQ. I hope any international visitor would jump at the opportunity of high quality BBQ as a cultural experience and at great dining even though to the uninitiated, one might just see it as unsophisticated piles of meat and sauce.
Define "dangerous"? Try Anchor & Hope. Also check the menu at Public House (AT&T Park). Beer selection is top notch; if the food items look interesting go for it. If you don't care about a huge selection, you'll find something good to drink pretty much anywhere. And a 10 minute cab ride will get you most anywhere in the city.
