Spotted recently at a Minnesota Twins Spring Training game, the stadium was making beer shakes (think milkshake with beer instead of milk) one of their beverage offerings: http://www.foodbeast.com/news/blue-moon-creamsicle-shake/ So what do you think? Another ridiculous drink fad to try to make mass market beer more palatable or hip? Or is pouring some beer into your ice cream something we real beer lovers would do? Any good beer shake recipes you know of?
Would I do it at home with a good hard to find beer? No....Does a blue moon creamsicle shake sound great when its 100 degrees outside watching baseball? Yes.
From the pic it looks like it has a lot of orange additive which is just going to overpower the rest. Doesn't seem like the beer would come rough Now they mention a double chocolate version, that might do it In the end I have been thinking of beer floats lately with he stouts I have. Just don't know if it would work since they aren't as sweet as root beer, so the flavors might not meld. Somehow a BBA chocolate stout float just sounds good.
The title of the thread had me thinking this had something to do with withdrawal symptoms As for the true intent of the thread, my family has a hard core addiction to a particular Blue Moon (Hose of Flavors, northern Michigan) and therefore my beer shake with blue moon would be seen as a crime against nature. But if I could sneak off and have one, hells yes! Edit* BLue Moon BEER, I get it, hahaha! Oh shit, I thought it was Blue Moon flavor ice cream.....oh my.......
This sounds good. I might have to try it. It can't hurt to experiment/pair beer with food, especially one as available as Blue Moon. I've made a root beer float with NYFRB and it was awesome. I think a shandy mixed with some Italian ice would be good - essentially anything that has a strong fruity/sugary flavor would pair well.
Well, I clearly thought this thread was about something else. Carry on, then. (Goes off to find damn bottle opener. Why can't I find damn mumble grumble bottle opener?)
I don’t think a shake would work well because all you would be left with is the base flavor of the beer and miss any carbonation. However, a beer-float wouldn’t be a bad idea. You keep the beer flavor AND the carbonation while allowing the ice cream to (hopefully) enhance the beer on a hot summer day! I could see a porter or stout working well with a chocolate ice cream, a hefeweizen/wheat working well with vanilla, and a lager well with a sherbet.
Hahahaha-- I was worrying there would be confusion over delirium tremens and a ice beer shake when I put it up.
The beer float is definitely a thing-- I have seen Guinness Floats (and tried one before). They are pretty good if you like stouts. I would imagine any other Nitro Stout of similar taste profile would work: http://www.bonappetit.com/recipes/holidays-recipes/article/guinness-floats
I've used Belching Beaver's Peanut Butter Stout in a beer float with vanilla ice cream a few times and it is quite good. Not sure how a shake would be though.
Well, I'd drink it if I want to get drunk in a hip and young style lol, which is never. In all seriousness, I don't think beer and shakes go well together, maybe it's just me. Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy -Zeriods
Hoppin' Frog does these at their taproom in Akron. They do their shandy mixed with a local cake batter ice cream and call it "Lemon Pound Cake Beershake". It's incredible. They also do a Chocolate Beershake which is chocolate ice cream blended with B.O.R.I.S. Buddy had that one and said it was amazing as well.
Best beer floats I've tried are Brooklyn Black Chocolate stout with Vanilla ice cream and Cigar City Caffe Americana with Vanilla ice cream. Both were amazing.
They've also done a pumpkin one (Frog's Hollow), a butterscotch one (Outta Kilter or Karminator, can't remember), peanut butter (Infusion A), and I think even a Christmas one (Frosted Frog). They're all stupidly delicious.
