There was an interesting detail in the lede for an article about the Downtown Crossings development, a major facelift for central New Haven. Apparently the guy behind the deal (which is an incredibly sweet deal, btw - he's only investing $500,000 in exchange for 11 acres of prime real estate that will cost the taxpayers millions to improve) has the idea that beer is somehow trashy, as it makes the blacklist along with "adult" stores, dollar stores, and (my personal favorite) "dance halls."

Wine, of course, will be totally fine.

Let's hope that things change, as it would be sad to see New Haven take a step backwards after rapidly becoming the best beer town in southern New England.

That's unfortunate. I worked in downtown New Haven for two years and was amazed by all the incredible bars and restaurants. Hartford and Middletown (for Central CT BAs) are laughable compared to NH.

This jackass needs to realize it's not 1971 anymore. As for me, I look forward to classily sipping a glass of Mad Dog wine in this self-aggrandizing puritan's development if I can't have a pint of NEBCO while I'm in New Haven.

Saw the article from New England Brewing and I saw your post, good stuff! Keep up the fight to let everyone know beer isn't the swill of peasants. PS what kind of beers does The Wine Thief have, that store is a minute from where I intern.

The downtown Wine Thief carries a pretty solid selection of high-end American craft as well as a bunch of good imports (De Dolle, BrewDog, Hanssens, J.W. Lees, etc). In my comment on the article I was alluding to BrewDog's Tactical Nuclear Penguin and Sink the Bismarck, both of which have been for sale.
