There should be a separate beer style category for India Pale Lager. Mass Rising from Jacks Abby and other beers similar in style are called Imperial Pilsners. Does Imperial Pilsner/American Double describe the style?

IPL is basically an imperial pils. The abv on many of the highest rated IPLs is 7+% while the average highly rated pils tops out at 5.5%

Do most IPL's use 2-row or Pils as a base malt? Honest question...

Excellent question, my honest answer is that I do not know. I really enjoyed Great Lakes Silver & Gold so I checked their website for info about the ingredients. Unfortunately, they did not have much info about that particular beer.

I picked up a bottle of Ballast Fathom IPL, the guy at the store couldn't believe they would make such an "abomination" but I've read some decent reviews. I will probably review it tonight.

The difference between IPL's and Imperila Pisleners is the the type of hops used. India Pale Lagers use hops similar to an IPA to get a more IPA like flavor from a lager. Imperial Pilseners are just amped up pilseners.

I think there are other more pressing style distinctions than IPL.
There should be an imperial red/amber ale style, and cascadian dark ales (the non-contradictory proper name of "black IPA"s) shouldn't be lumped with black ales. We have pale ales and IPAs, why don't we have black ales and CDAs?

The term Black Pale Ale has historical precedence, can be traced back to the 1800's. Cascadian Dark Ale is named for a region that like to take credit for others accomplishments. I am not sure I would call the latter proper.

I'll have to do some more research into the subject, but I still think there should be a distinction between Black IPAs and black ales...although I guess that's on the same level as IPL vs Imperial Pilsner
