When will the styles be adjusted? I thought there was going to be some added. I do still see happoshu as a style and I thought that was discontinued

Definitely by the end of the year.

As for Happoshu, I'll tag @shigg85 to see where he's at with moving things around.

Looks like you can still add a happoshu as a style. One was added 10/10/25. Perhaps that's what's slowing things down? People are adding them while someone is deleting them, lol.

Looks like only two were added. No big deal.

Mods are volunteers who help out in their spare time, but I'll go ahead and expedite this by moving the remainder and deleting the "style" this week.

What category are you moving the happoshu to?

To whatever style best fits each individual beer.

I'm not sure I understand the benefit. Happoshu might be a tax category, but government categories and beer styles work together. The ingredients in happoshu disqualify it from being considered "beer" legally. Many of the beer styles used on BA are driven by ingredient distinctions and percentages. If the Japanese see happoshu as distinctly different than "rice lager" (as it's called on BA, for example), then why not keep things the way the Japanese would see them? If it's due to some European and American imports also being legally thrown into that category in Japan, you can view that phenomenon as an "ale in Texas" sort of thing. Sorry to start a conversation about something probably determined a while ago.

No problem. Basically, Happoshu was added ages ago. It shouldn't have been, because it's not a beer style and the styles of beer that can fall under this tax category can greatly vary.

@shigg85, who lives in Japan, has been pushing for this update to be made for a while now.

To be clear, most Cantillon is also "happoshu" in Japan, as is Alesmith Speedway Stout and others that involve lots of things beyond hops and/or malt. It's a silly tax category, not a way of effectively describing a beer style.

To clarify my "ale in Texas" comment - Not too long ago, lager beer in Texas had a legal limit of 5% ABV so imported German lager above that threshold had to be legally classified as ale or malt liquor in Texas. This legal phenomenon didn't lead to BeerAdvocate removing their use of the word "ale" (or lager, or beer) as a category and it didn't make anybody on BeerAdvocate reconsider a 6% German lager as an "ale."

On BA, there's a style category for Speedway Stout that fits that beer (and is in sync with the culture that made that beer) better than "happoshu" does. Is there a style category on BA that fits a typical Japanese happoshu beverage better than "happoshu"? Genuine question, not meant to be snarky at all.

Again, whatever the actual style of the beer is. And, as @shigg85 and I explained, styles vary.

    Examples:
    • One was a Blonde Ale so I moved it accordingly.
    • Some are very close to basically being a Japanese Rice Lager or American Adjunct Lager.
    • But I found one that was a Belgian Pale Ale.
    • And another that was a Witbier.
    • One was more of a European Pale Lager.
    • How about a decoction lager with 2x aroma hops?
    • Just deleted one because it was a hard seltzer with fruit juice.
I could go on, but I hope you get it now.
