I'm going to be in Konstanz for a bit. I have seen lots of pilsners and -weizens, but not a lot of other styles. I would enjoy more variety, or even just suggestions of what your favorite beers are, that are easily found in Konstanz.

Recommendations for beer to look for? Recommendations for stores and breweries from which to buy beer?

    Thank you.

There are large swaths of Germany that are like this. I have never been to Konstanz so I can't recommend anything other than trying widely available beers like Weihenstephaner, Schneider Weisse, Andechs, Rothaus, Reissdorf, Früh, or other highly rated and easy to find German beer - this is as fresh as you are ever likely to find them. German beer has a large focus on whatever is local. You are not likely to find (good) alts in Konstanz, for example, and even (good) Dunkels can be hard to come by sometimes. Certain websites are good for delivering straight to your door, but you'd need a German address to ship to and you may need a German bank account, I'm not sure (it's possible they'll do credit cards, I've never gone that route). If you're up for ordering online, try one of the following:

    Biershop Braugasthofe
    Biershop Bayern
    Kneitinger (brewery)
    Schlenkerla (brewery)

My only request is that if you use one of the first two websites, don't get something you can find in the US.

Good luck, keep us posted on what you find!

There is not much in terms of beer selection. There's a nice brew pub (Joh. Albrecht) and there's Ruppaner brewery, albeit not in the centre of Konstanz but their beers are everywhere in town. Edeka has some "other German beers" as well but if you stay in town long enough you'd be looking further afield.

I was there for 9 days last christmas and went to the brew pub almost every day for a few litres of Messing and Weinachtsbock. The place was full every time. I also went over to Switzerland and checked out some Swiss beers. My German friend moved there that's why I crossed into CH several times. Btw, there's a Getränkemarkt not far from the border (I didn't go there, next time I will) but of course the price will be in Swiss francs  My friend says there they have a lot of Swiss beers from all over.

Thanks for the input, both of you! I have not been to the Joh. Albrecht brewpub, but I plan to.

I have found the most variety in Edeka, and have tried several new brands I have not found back in the states; Weihenstephaner Kristallweizen, Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel, and Rothaus Pilsner and Hefeweizen (heck, their Märzen too) were all very good. I recall seeing several varieties from Andechs, and look forward to trying them, as that Doppelbock was really quite something.

I tried my first schwarzbier, Das Echte from Dinkelacker-Schwabenbräu, but amn't sure that I liked it much. I may have been subconsciously expecting something like a light porter or Irish stout, and was met with something that seemed more watery.

I've mentioned it before, but a buddy of mine owns Schussenrieder Brauerei located in Bad Schussenreid, not far from Konstanz. If you get a chance, check out their Bierkrug Museum and they have a great little Braustube with Leberkäse and freshly baked bread, all for a small fee. After all, it's the middle of Schwabenland (figuratively, the Scots among the Germans).

We stayed in Konstanz last summer - one of the highlights for me was a visit to the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen.

Zeppelins took off from here with their end point of NYC - it is difficult to believe this was even possible 100 yrs ago...
