So my buddy is having a beer tasting, dinner, etc. He asked us to each bring a couple of good bombers of beer so that we can share, etc etc. He and I have some whales. One of our friends is new to the craft beer scene and is really getting into it, and doesn't have much in the way of anything major, which I don't mind because he's a great guy and is very generous. One of the other guys that is invited has a good supply of quality brews. He is the type that will say he's bring X, yet when he gets there, always has an excuse like "I forgot to refrigerate it this morning, so I didn't bring it" or "I couldn't make it home in time to grab it, so I stopped by such and such and grabbed one of Y".

I don't mind sharing my beer. In fact that's why I buy it, but I can't stand mooches.

What do you do in these situations? Don't bring the whalez? Bring it and don't worry about it? Probably not a big deal and the amount he'd be drinking is minimal anyway.

With respect to the newbie, bring the whalez, blow his mind, and get him hooked!! I had a newbie help me move a few months back and dropped a Heady on him when we were done. He can't stop talking about the new beers he's found and tried...

As for the other guy, try to not invite him next time, find a new friend. Everyone forget to pack the bag on the way out the door once in a while, but regularly that doesn't cut it.

Every tasting has people that don't want to pull their weight (note WANT, I have no problems sharing with people just because they aren't capable of pulling whales, and there is nothing wrong with shelf beer if that is all you can bring). We had a chick in our group that stopped coming to tastings because we didn't have enough whales yet she brought shelf stuff. It's like I am sorry our beer supply that you are barely contributing to isn't good enough for you.

To your issue, if you know the guy is purposely holding out, drop him from the group.

Oh yeah, I have. I shared a CBS, several KBS, couple Parabolas, and a couple barrel-aged Three Floyds things with him. He's definitely hooked, but just doesn't have access to the big stuff, except CCB brews. He's failed on that front!

He's a good friend and will continue to share the good stuff with him.

That's my guess. He's the guy that will send you texts at midnight cuz he just found a place tapping PtY or will come over, look at your fridge and ask for a Heady Topper, stating "yeah, I love this stuff. Just polished off a 4 pack last month."

He lives close by and he's a good reason why my backyard kegerator taps have locks!

Mooches can definitely ruin a mood. I would ignore this one person as long as the others in the group are more worthy company. That person's reputation will always create obstacles, avoidance and ill will in his life.

Yeah, I say bring the goods man, but the guy that doesn't want to share his stuff, avoid inviting him to any of your future beer tasting parties.

    1. The first person I'm pretty much fine with. If he's spending a reasonable amount of money on his shelf beers that is comparable to what you are spending on whales, then that's alright.

He's new, maybe he doesn't the time, money, desire, knowledge, whatever to beer trade for rarer beers. Maybe he'll get into it. Even if he's bringing a shelf beer, but still spending $20+ on a Bruery beer or $10-15 on a bomber of something, that's still a decent amount of money.

Your beers will obviously be more "expensive" because beer trading with shipping and time just adds a premium onto the price of beer.

In the end, I don't drink my bombers to my face. It's great to have some company to share them with because my friends also spend a reasonable amount of beers too.

    2. The second person, if this happens very consistently, then I'd be annoyed. Are you saying he's showing up absolutely empty handed? That's a really not cool move. I'd start off with a sarcastic, "Oh jeez man, it's been like the past 5! times that you forgot to bring something. It's almost like you hang with us to get free beer. Heh..."

Nah, he is saying the guy says he's going to bring .rar stuff and shows up with shelf stuff instead with an excuse as to why he didn't bring his A game.

The first person is fine. I enjoy sharing with him and he's grateful. He brings what he can. So no worries. The second guy is more of the issue. In the mass text between the group, I basically said that everyone should bring something worthy. I'm bringing a Fruet and a couple Pt5 barrel aged. I know the dude's got something semi-comparable. He will end up bringing an Ass Kisser smoked porter or something

Have everyone drop off the beers prior to the tasting if it's held at a home. Get 'em to temp and settle out the bottle conditioned ones.

Make sure the mooch always gets the last pour of a bomber/750. He'll fill up on yeast/sediment & be too full to drink much.

honestly i've only been to one bottle share and i really wanted to make a good impression so i grabbed a bunch of stuff that i really enjoy personally like kbs, bcbs, a night to end all dawns etc etc probably more than i should of lol. point being i don't understand how anyone can be stingy about bringing good stuff, i think its a dick move and it just goes to show that some people really don't appreciate it being apart of the bottle share, and just wanna tick away at their list

I have no problem sharing great beer with people just getting into craft beer or only have access to shelf beer. That is part of being a good beer advocate. We usually tell those people to bring some food and leave the beer to us. The mooch? Kick him to the curb. Maybe send him a pic of all the beers from the tasting he isn't invited to

Sounds like a friend issue not a beer one to me.
