I say just take him aside and let him know how everyone feels. Its good to vent a little before you talk to someone about something like this. Some times it can be awkward and he maybe offended but its a good kind of hurt like a tetanus shot because things should get better from that point on. If they don't at least you tried, a lot of times people use the reaction they assume someone else will have as an excuse to do nothing about it which only ever makes it worse. You can't resent someone forever and that's a lot harder to me then just saying hey you say you can get these beers so you have to start brining them.

Also have you ever considered maybe he's exaggerating his ability to actually get some of these beers in the first place?

Dang, I'll be your friend. If I find a really great beer I tend to not drink it by myself and really want to share it. Partially, I just want to show off that I have it. And also want to make sure more people than I can enjoy this special beer. So it's partly being selfish part wanting others to enjoy.

I would continue as usual, you know this guy is like this so maybe don't invite him next time or convince him to throw a tasting. I think you'll have fun just the same, and with more people you can open more awesome beers to taste.

Damn, I just finished reading this thread while finishing off a Black Butte XXIV, waiting for my girl to get ready so we can go out and drink a couple BMCs with friends. It would be way cooler if instead those friends were coming here, each with a different bomber (or 2) of something cool to share; maybe one day...

The last time someone I know showed up with nothing, not shelf, not anything, while we were opening big and he was drinking plenty. Like I say, that was his last time.

This is pretty much why I do not want to join a tasting. I just might end up becoming a mooch. I do not have a lot to offer. I've seen pictures of tastings and I'm like HOLY MACKEREL HOW DO YOU GET THEM?!
When I have a good beer (and they aren't much compared to the beer at tastings) I much prefer sharing with a good friend or relative. Plus I don't really want to drink a 4 oz. pour.

Its not the people that don't have a lot to offer that are the problems. Its the ones that do have a lot to offer, but instead of bringing their good stuff, they bring a shelf turd.

Ok, so here's how it went last night.

I brought an Evolution Menagerie #8, a Bruery Fruet, some Pliny and a growler of Rubaeus that we mixed w/ Breakfast Stout (fantastic).

The guy brought one bottle of Doom. It did not get opened, so he took it home. So, Doom isn't bad, but he only brought one beer and he basically drank 1/2 of the Pliny I brought, as well as some of everything else. I thought he was gonna drop his pants and bang the Fruet bottle. He kept trying to drink each last drop from the bottle. Sad.

By the way, Fruet is amazing.

Fruet is amazing. Had some a few weeks ago. I've recently had the problem of one friend in particular bringing stuff to share and then we start with my stuff and he never gets around to opening his bottles and then takes them home and I'll see him drinking them on Untappd later. Do what I do, he doesn't get the invite anymore.

WoW. 0_0 Just WoW. That guy will never see himself the way others do. If he reads this thread he will be like; "yeah that's a mooch. "

Oh, and he's an obnoxious drunk on top of it.
That's pretty simple to sort out. Until he learns, don't invite him back.

That solves it. Sounds like he should be off the list. Granted Doom is nice, but fairly easily available in comparison. Also a single bottle. Granted, the bottle shares I attend require a single bottle, but I don't know anyone that shows up with only one...

As for the Rubaeus with some Breakfast Stout, that sounds awesome! Great idea by someone!

By the way, I forgot to mention, the newbie even brought two bottles. Allagash Curieaux and Allagash Black. I was impressed!

The thing that kinda ticked me off about the Doom is that he knew I have 5 or 6 bottles of it and the host has 3. Basically he knew we were going to crack it open.

It was really good. I went 2/3 FBS and 1/3 Rubaeus...perfect mixture

even the fact that he brought the doom back home is pretty beat IMO, like i mentioned in my other post i've only been to one bottle share but even after i left i didn't take anything that wasn't opened home with me. he was a great host so i just wanted to leave em there for him to enjoy, as the majority of other people did. beer karma = best karma :grinning:

Props to the newbie, showing up with the Curieux. The other guy's a clown / asshat / douche

Having, refusing to bring, and mooching other's stuff goes far beyond the beer scene. There's a character issue there that would make anyone wonder why they continue to hang with him. Sorry, I'm a therapist: sometimes I can't help myself.

    Gotta rotate.
Don't open two of your bottles in a row.
I have 5 total, including me, in my group.
Each person picks a beer in rotating fashion, usually their own, sometimes others'.
After you tell him to start pulling his weight and to bring two bottles of something great next time,
crack his best offering right when he shows up. Don't even ask him.

Anyone can go to a tasting and bring quality stuff and be welcomed. When a newbie asked me, I sent him to the local bottle shop and told him to inquire with the owner to "surprise us." He got an education and showed up with a couple of great bottles that every one enjoyed.
