It's also counter productive-tax revenues actually fall when rates get beyond a certain point. But perhaps the health lobby have been twisting the knife. In fact although binge drinking is headline grabbing alcohol consumption is actually falling.
But the tax levels mentioned in this thread are so tiny as to be monumentally irrelevant.A few cents on a beer is neither here nor there. But in this country the duty (that's the flat rate bases on quantity) on a bottle of wine is around $3 and on a pint of beer (varies with ABV) is around 60 cents. But on top of this is sales tax (VAT) of 20% added on to the marked up price and it's around a dollar a pint.
But we still manage to drink more beer per head than in the US.

Looks like they have the same map with the correct explanation that the amounts are per gallon elsewhere on their website.

(Compare with map linked in "beertunes" OP http://finance.townhall.com/columnists/politicalcalculations/2012/03/11/beer_taxes_by_state and the introductory paragraph that specifically asks "How much tax will you pay on a can of beer?" and then repeats " 12-ounce container".)
