Can a microwave be set for 10 seconds? Mine is 30 seconds minimum, enough time to probably do some damage from an exploding bottle of beer if I get distracted. I'm just warning people not to be stupid if they do this, or avoit it altogether.

I love this post. This is exactly why we need a "best of BA" section, a kind of hall of fame.

I like that he's not only advocating putting steel in the microwave, but following that up with then balancing the bottle on its narrowest point for a few minutes. The degree of difficulty really comes through in the mouthfeel, not so much in the aroma.

An alternative method would be to place it in your sous-vide machine for a couple minutes. Or just a water bath. Or your armpit. Or your crotch, with "crotch" maybe being tied for "microwave it and then balance it on its cap" for most superfluous ways to warm ~12o of liquid 10dF.

I let mine warm up the natural way, in the bottle with the cap on. For loss of carbonation I try to have my beer drank within 25 minutes. Large bottler I fit the cap or cork back on while I'm drinking the glass. When I order a bottle to warm up I request them to keep the cap on until I'm ready to drink it. Even with explaining what I'm doing, I usually get a strange stare, then they pop the cap or cork anyways & are like here's your beer. Oh Flying Saucer.

    Microwave oven 101:

    Microwaves are energy.
To work properly a microwave oven must have something inside it to absorb that energy.
Metal reflects microwaves but gets hot doing so as the energy builds up without being absorbed. A small amount of metal and nothing else to absorb the microwaves will cause the energy to build up, sparks will fly and the metal will get very hot.
If a relatively small amount of metal is placed into a microwave with a good amount of energy absorbing material the energy will not build up and whatever is reflected off the metal will be absorbed instantly by the absorbing material.

In the winter, I just drink everything room temperature. Summer I drink straight out of the fridge. Spring/fall it depends on the day, but I'll usually throw a beer in the freezer when I get home from work and let it stay in there 15-20 minutes while I change clothes, etc.

Sure could have fooled me last time I put a jar of peanut butter in there with a tiny bit of the sealing foil left on there. Reminded me of fireworks on the fourth of July.

I've done this about 30 times to date. Only risk is getting 2/3 inches of foam from the bottle after uncapping if you don't pour soon enough.
I only do this because I try not to have anything to eat/drink before going to bed but sometimes, at the last minute I just figure F it and head for the fridge.

I prefer most my beer in the 50 to ambient temp range. My solution? Pour half and leave the bottle out to come to temp.

Hey, if it works for you, then more power to you. I'll continue to use an alternative way of warming my beer up a bit. 20-30 mins on the counter while I take care of a few things around the house or scan BA works for me.

    It was mostly full.
I was standing there, so only caught a couple sparks, but I was a little freaked about it.
Anyways, to the topic at hand, I don't think I'd trust a beer in the microwave. I generally keep mine on the door of the fridge, and if it needs a bit of warming, I just leave it on the counter for a little while. No need for heroic measures or Rube Goldberg methods to do this.

I wouldn't put any bottle caps in the microwave, I only microwave my cans of beer.
