I had a package delivered today by FedEx and discovered it was missing when I got home from work. Asked with neighbors and it turns out on of the witnessed someone stealing it and call the cops with the license plate number. About to follow up with the police, but to wanted to get people's advice on this.

Has anyone ever had a beer box stolen before? Do I need to tell the police that it was beer? Will this open me up to issues with having beer sent to me or issues with my trading partner sending beer?

it's only illegal to ship beer via usps. fedex and ups 'frown' upon it. not sure if this helps at all. very odd situation. please keep us informed on how things roll out.

Appreciate the info @mothman. Having an officer come out now so I can file a report. I'll keep people posted on the updates, sure to be riveting.

and @beardown2489, I would highly doubt that this was a targeted thing because of beer, more likely some jerks following the delivery truck and stealing whatever they can find.

The delivery guy put it in my unlocked front porch, but didn't bother to move it to the side so it wasn't visible from the street. A box sitting just inside a glass porch door is just asking to be grabbed by some jerk driving through the neighborhood.

@sembo , You could say an old friend from (insert city) was sending you some collectable glass ware and other memorabilia, if they find beer, you can claim ignorance to the whole shipping beer thing ( I doubt the cops care about the actual contents of the box)

I think your address might get red-flagged, not for beer, but for having a package stolen from your doorstep. An apartment I lived at was 'red flagged' , meaning they refused to leave anything at the door, I had to sign for everything directly (or a neighbor/roommate)

I read in the paper that package thefts are sky rocketing , like the O.P. said some jerk , scumbag following the truck or just happened to drive by while it was being delivered . At least the neighbor got the plate number .I doubt you'll get the beer back but with luck the thief will get a vacation at the greybar.

Spoke to the cops and they weren't very helpful. I told them it was beer, valued at $100 to $150. They told me it was misdemeanor theft, punishable with a fine. The plate my neighbor got didn't match the vehicle description, so they said with no real leads, they won't follow up on it. The cop didn't understand the beer being valuable and said, even if we catch the people, they probably will have drank the beer. I get that there isn't much they could do and it is a minor crime not worth the time to track down, even if they did have info, but trqt me with a little courtesy/empathy. Instead of asking "what do you want us to do?" With an attitude, explain to me what you could do, even if options are limited.

No whales, but I don't actually know what was in it. From my regular trading partner from NY, with some stuff from NY, VT and his recent trip to San Diego. He told me it was "the best box ive sent in the 3 years we've traded", so that was a bummer.

Will have to have packages deliver to my back porch and stashed in the future.

Damn dude that really sucks!!! I have a package coming this week so that makes me a little scared since we're in the same neck of the woods.

Just got back from my Chicago trip and brought back some real gems if you want to drown your sorrows...

Can you have personal packages sent to your work? If so, have them sent there in the future if your front porch isn't the best place.

You can also have them held at FedEx/UPS as well, small inconvenience to make sure you get the package.

But then there is the idiot who sends it to the wrong address so you have to steal it off the front step of your former residence.

Lol! That was sure an awkward experience, but it all worked out. Definitely did feel like I was stealing though.

Unfortunately the big red bullseye frowns on alcohol around work, plus too big of a workplace for that.

I think this is going to have to be my method going forward. Unfortunate for the inconvenience, but not worth the risk in the future, I guess.

I've had this happen to me too. I moved and my guy used my old address. The people who lived there weren't home due to Christmas break and the package sat on their front porch for 2 or 3 days Luckily we were having a warm snap and all the beer ended up being ok. Surprised that one didn't end up getting stolen. 3 days vs. 4 hours in that situation compared to yesterday. Plus, my current neighborhood is "nicer", but I guess that probably does more to attract criminals. Nicer area means people are probably getting nicer stuff that you can steal, right?

Also, the police talked to my neighbor, who gave them the correct license plate number (the officer I talked to wrote the number down incorrectly. Didn't bother to read off what she had written down to confirm that she didn't make an error when she ran the plate and it didn't match the vehicle description) and a description of the suspects. So there is some hope that they will at least get caught for it.

Other neighbors posted that they found 3 boxes in their alley ripped open and ditched with the contents gone, so it sounds like these people went "shopping" at a few houses besides mine. And that I won't be getting my beer back.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

@KingCharles - no need for charity, but we will have to meet up again soon. I've got some goodies from another trade and the F44 cellar sale to share.

Watch craigslist. Though they probably have no idea what they got and will probably drink it, realize it doesn't taste like bud light lime and drain pour it.

I've had one package go missing off my front porch. I'm across the street from the park and it was summer, I suspect kids up to no good for no reason other than "Stay off my yard" syndrome. Ever since then I place a hold on the package and pick it up at the nearest FedEx office from me on the way home. When I forget I haven't had any problems, but all it took was once and I was paranoid and disappointed. Sorry for your loss.

If I'm not going to be around I always reroute it to the nearest FedEx office and pick it up.
