Ok so i'm posting this with the expectation of getting threadshitted/criticized for encouraging everything that is wrong with the current craft beer community. That being said, i am thinking about putting together a spreadsheet that roughly illustrates the trade values of respective beers based primarily on just observing the ISO/FT board postings, as well as other research factors. It will be sort of a tier-based scale. Not sure if there is already something like this floating around on here but many ISO/FT threads that use point systems kind of already do this (however close or off those points may be). For example, Hommage would be on par with ADwtD, a slight tier below would be DB Huna/BA Abraxas/CFH/Remy's Pappy/DDG, a slight tier below that would be V013/Mocha Wed./BA Sump/Fou Foune/LPK/etc., a slight tier below that would be Prop/LiL/Grey Monday/etc., so on and so forth. I know everybody says that "it just takes the right pair of eyes" and that is true, but more and more it seems that people on here are getting very savvy about researching "appropriate" value before posting and agreeing to trades. Thoughts? Complete waste of time? Let people figure it out for themselves?
Are you doing it for you or to constantly post in the trade forum to price enforce? If for you, have at it. Probably a waste of time, but hell, if it makes you feel more comfortable about your trades, so be it. If for "educating" others in the trade forum, I would think you would become pretty unpopular pretty quick.
Yeah, good points... the more i think about it, the less i want to do it. I just envisioned some kind of chart to kick around that shows current trade values, or at least what i estimate them to be. Didn't really want to screw with it going forward and try to make it some kind of live database. Actually I kind of hate when value police dominate people's ISO threads... so definitely don't want to put a tool out there to encourage that behavior. Given that the values would be correct in the first place
problem is it needs to be constantly updated. and also things change. Bramble went from not super hard to really hard to trade for. VSB is a whale now, and new breweries like Side Brewery become massive. these things are just hard to put a finger on sometimes. the crowd is always changing
Seems like your heart is in the right place, but a lot of this fluid and opinion based. You could make a flawless spreadsheet today and it could get turned upside down tomorrow morning. My advise, for what it's worth, save your time and drink some good beer tonight instead. Cheers!
This actually sounds sorta fun. But I'm a geek like that. However, I wouldn't post it sense it's all bases on your opinion of trade values. Just keep it for yourself as references for future trades. If you do end up doing it, have fun with it and try not to stress out. Cheers!
Thanks, I'm probably not going to do it. It sounded good in my head and while I was typing it out but not so much anymore
I don't think you could do it solely because of how quickly values change... for instance, a lot of people claiming Prop has already fallen off can turn the value pretty quick. Values are also really dependent on the time of year... you know, depending on how long it's been since a release. i.e. trading for Dark Lord immediately after Dark Lord Day compared to in September.
Yeah I know... always fluctuating, and it wouldn't have included every beer under the sun either, just the major ones you see getting traded frequently
yeah, best to lock this since OP isn't planning on actually making the list. leaving it up for reference as these ideas come up again and again over time. great in principle, but difficult to accomplish practically and nearly impossible to keep current and/or maintain.
