Yep, I also use those situations for drinking beers I have a surplus of(i.e. partially dranken 6 pack), and save the new beers for when I feel better. Ditto with special and special occasion beers, like Bourbon County stout.

But.. but.. but alcohol kills germs, doesn't it? :stuck_out_tongue:

It's the time I'm going to drink the rest of those Rainier Ale 16 ozs. Nothing llike dozing in a hot tub when you feel like crap. A cold beer still goes down the inflamed throat nicely.

No. When I get a cold, I get a cold. No point in drinking something I can't taste, and will probably worsen my condition.

I'm not a doctor but since alcohol kills germs it's only logical that by drinking large amounts of booze I will get better more quickly.

I wont rate a beer when im congested, i will only drink a beer that i know what it tastes like. my judgement is blurred when im congested. last weekend i went out and bought some nasal decongestant because i wanted to review good morning from treehouse and wanted to give it a fair rating

By drinking more booze you're actually slowing down your immune response. Since you're immune system is responsible for combating foreign bacteria, you're doing more harm than good by binge drinking.

By the time you had enough alcohol in your system to completely kill all of the bacteria in your body, you'd likely need a stomach pump or two

It most certainly kills the majority of bacterium but considering the amount of beer you would need to get a high enough blood alcohol level to do so, I think that killing bacteria would be the least of your issues :grinning:

I don't usually drink when I am sick, but sometimes a nice sour will power through

I never review beer when I am sick, or even a minor congestion (say allergies).

I normally get a good cold between the Winter Spring transition but so far been lucky (knock on wood thud).

Just in general I never get any pleasure (except maybe a day off work) in being sick, I can't smell, taste anything... we all know it just sucks... so I stay away from drinking when I am like that, it's just not fun, no nightcaps either...

it drives me nuts I can't even taste the food I am eating let alone drinks...

I made a bunch of trades for a big tasting last NYE with a big group of friends and, of course, I got sick that week. I was feeling good enough to drink that night but I knew congestion was definitely going to get in the way for proper rating/reviewing new stuff. What to do, what to do?

    2 words: Habanero. Sculpin.

Worked better than any cold medicine/decongestant I've tried (and I'm a pharmacist so I know my way around the medicine cabinet!)

The moral of the story is that beer is the best medicine.

The beer experience is totally ruined for me when I have a cold. However, if I pour myself a strong single malt scotch and inhale it, it clears me up a little bit.

Since Vicks Nyquil has alcohol in it, I can only assume ALL alcoholic beverages will make you feel better. Probably more is better in this situation.

I thought this thread was going to be about opening a cold one when stuck in heavy traffic. <rimshot>

I usually wait, especially if it's a beer I haven't had before. Your senses are really diminished when you have a cold.

The one time I had Lunch, I was sick and wasn't blown away--probably because I was sick.

I'm congested today, and I had two new beers. Still tasted them, maybe not as well as usual. I did take a decongestant, so it was minimal. I agree with those who say being congested is not the same thing as feeling sick. I feel good, just a little congested. Now, if I'm sick and feel like crap, of course I'm not going to drink at all.
