So I was just skimming some beers I had highly rated, and noticed Pegs Good Rare DOS had an rAvg of 4.75. I thought this was insanely high. Obviously the overall rating is based upon the number of reviews, which is why Rare DOS is ranked 8th overall instead of #1, but it got me thinking...whats the highest rated beer by rAvg? For fairness sake I think the beer should have at least 10 reviews. In which case the highest one I found was an absurd 4.9 for Vanilla and Coconut Speedway. Im curious and would like to make three tiers based on highest rAvg for >10 reviews, >25 reviews, and > 100 reviews. Currently this is what Ive found, but I may have missed some so please chime in if I missed any: >10 reviews: Vanilla and Coconut Speedway Stout - rAvg 4.9 and my presumed overall winner >25 reviews: Peg's Rare DOS- rAvg 4.75, >100 reviews: Pliny the Younger- rAvg 4.67 (733 reviews)
you're likely to have found any active beers with a rating this high. if they have more than 10 reviews and a 4.9 or over, they're almost certainly on the top 100 anyway, even after being weighted down. same with your other tiers. the only place you can really look if you're trying to find more are the retired beers, as they don't show up on the top 100 list (hence why the Armand'4 isn't on the top 100, as it assuredly would be otherwise). i would personally tend to trust the weighted rAVG - it's weighted for a reason. no point in trying to reverse engineer statistics. when you have a smaller sample size, the rAvg is less meaningful.
I remember when Ann had an average of 4.9 something. I am happy to see it at 4.66 these days (I don't regret not taking an opportunity to trade for one that much)
I certainly understand the weighted rankings, and trust me Im a firm believer in statistics, but I thought itd be fun to see what beers were highest without the weighted averages taken into account. Obviously a 4.67 with 700 plus reviews is more impressive than a 4.70 with 105 reviews, but its interesting to see both, nonetheless. And M has surpassed Pegs Rare. I do remember when Ann had 20 some reviews and was at the 4.9 level. It appears with any beer ( and really anyTHING) the more people the try it the more likely someone will be less than impressed by it, for obvious reasons, you cant please everyone.
