Beer with the wrong label?

I just poured an Otter Creek Black IPA, and it's so off for the style that I would almost believe they put the wrong label on one of their porters.

Have you ever had a beer so off-style that you thought it was in the wrong bottle?

Nope, but I did have that beer yesterday and it tasted more like a Porter than an IPA.

My thoughts exactly. I mean, the "American Black Ale" style that BA lumps Black IPAs under is a bit broad, but something calling itself a Black IPA should have a good bit more hop flavor than this has.

Date? Could be past it's prime maybe.

I'd avoid LT and OT, with a few very specific exceptions. Was it from a mixed case?

5/22/13, so could be. IPAs can fade pretty badly, but it still should have had SOME hop flavor.

Not sure what it was originally part of; got it in a mix-a-six.

Should still I'd imagine. Never had that particular beer, but I'd wager lightly hopped black ipa+fade as more likely than mislabeled. Just my 2 cents though, could be wrong.

Probably; I don't really think it was literally mislabeled, as that's very improbable. The "wrong label" thing is mostly exaggeration.

Ah, got it. Reading comprehension ftw.

Had a beer recently in Knoxville from saw works brewery that they swore was a double ipa that tasted like water was passed through a hop filled Randall once, only thing I can think of that comes close to what you were talking about  .

Edit: And a scotch ale from smokey mountain brewery that tasted like nail polish remover/brown ale hybrid. I hate I'm moving back there dammit. :slight_frown:

When I opened this thread I thought this to be different.

    More like.

"I opened up nice BA ____ (Instert BA stout easily available in your distro) and instead of being jet black, it appeared to look and smell like a Bud Light"

I bought an Emelisse Espresso Stout recently that had the description of their Double IPA on the back of the bottle. The beer was good and what I had expected (not mislabeled as far as the beer that was actually in the bottle). It was just a misprint as far as the description on the label goes.

How do you know it wasn't the right label but the wrong beer?

I drank some really fresh Storm King a while back. If I didn't know any better, I would have sworn I was drinking a black IPA because it was so hoppy. I did enjoy it though.

I guess we should have switched beers.

When I worked on a bottling line I once put a stack of labels upside down. The rest of my day consisted of removing them and relabeling. That sucked.

The whole "Black IPA" or whatever you want to call it is silly to me. With maybe one or two exceptions, most that I've had just taste like hopped-up porters.

I was once given a sip of hooker vomit that was mistakenly labeled "Bud Chelada".
