Check out this post on a Chicagoland blog typically dedicated to local eating: Link

In this edition, their local beer expert recommends buying Dark Lord, Goose Island, and other limited release beers as "illiquid" investments -- for their resale value. Though the post might be meant as tongue-in-cheek, it's still pretty ugly.

I will not click the link, because I would have to track the blogger down and punch him in the nuts.

Yeah, I think that's clearly meant as a tongue-in-cheek critique of the lunacy here, rather than actually advising it as an investment strategy (or even examining its merits). What funny is that if he factored in his time he probably made significantly smaller returns, or even none at all.

The prices he lists are really strange. Who's paying $35 a BOTTLE for 2-month-old Hopslam?

Right, because absolutely no one on BA would ever think of buying something because it's good "trade fodder."

Think the syntax suggests a six pack runs for 35.

Just a quick run through and he is entirely correct for pricing. And I assume a great number of Chicago area BA's do exactly what he is suggesting...and everyone else is suffering for it.

You might be right, and who honestly cares, but...
" A bottle of Bell’s Hopslam, for which I paid $18 for a six-pack two months ago, is now going for $34"
    I must be missing something.

there are a few local bottle shops that are setting up cellars to age some of the hard to come by brews and plan on selling them at a later date (obviously) for a higher price. there are a couple brew pubs and even pizza places in denver who have already got on the aging bandwagon. as long as there are impatient people, there will be room for this kind of thing.

I am not saying I am for this but what many people fail to recognize is that Ebay/Paypal take a large chunk of the pie. There is also shipping involved. Don't think that a $15 bottle of Darklord with a $50 free shipping buy it now is all profit, more like a $15 dollar profit.

Find me that listing bro. $50 w/ free shipping is a pipe dream

It's articles like this that, whether or not it was meant tongue-in-cheek, "newbies" will see and think that's exactly what they should be doing. Sigh.

I wasn't listing a specific listing more a general don't think it is all profit idea. The article mentions DL going from $50 and up. Ebay/Paypal/shipping really add up.

It sure is. You can go to completed listings to see all the sold bottles over the years. $50 w/ free shipping more than a pipe dream.

What's interesting is as of late sellers are getting removed by ebay. I was the top bidder of a 4 pack of KBS (pretty pissed I didn't get more than the two I found through hours of hunting) and I received a message from ebay that says, well... See below

The article was conservativ at best. For one, most pad shipping costs and the ebay and paypal cut is marginal at best. 99/100 times the shipping padding covers that and some.

I would love to see ebay ban all collectible bottles.

Much like the original article, I can't tell if you are kidding or not. Unfortunately, I fear that you are not.

Ebay/Paypal take about %20. I don't think that is marginal. I just think to many people think sellers on Ebay are committing the egregious crime while make a huge profit. That is not the case in most instances. Right now there is some Heady Topper for $40 w free shipping. The seller is making $5 what a criminal!!

20% is way too high. Where did you get that number? Here's the link if you want to do some actual research on your own:

    http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

    https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=marketing_us/fees

And people aren't talking about $40 heady topper. They are talking about the beers that bring the big numbers...which hurts the rest of the community.

    Read
Read it Paypal is 3% and ebay is 11% that's 14% and there can be other charges depending on the listing. I personally have thousands of sales on ebay and just always assume a fee of 20%. So now the guy selling the Heady has made $7. What a piece of SH&T!!!
