That's what I like about them. Their Imperial Stout is actually pretty damn good. Like you said, very English with the malts and yeast. They're not bad yet not great either, but they are a cheaper alternative that has flavor.

In '96 or '97 I was thrilled to be on a business trip to Denver, but unfortunately my hotel was in the part that had never heard of 'craft' beer. Well, that's not exactly true- the barkeep at the hotel talked up Fat Tire like it was the best thing ever made, said people come from all around to drink it and all that. After my first glass I figured it'll do, but wished I had a hotel closer to where all the beer action was at.

Oberon was there as well as Best Brown Ale and Double Cream Stout. Hit up some Bell's but don't bring cans, those are circa 2014:slight_smile:

I'm not very aware of the beer scene in the 90's, but when I started homebrewing my dad and I made a clone of Pete's Wicked Ale... so if you have a few weeks until the event (and feel up to brewing a batch) my dad said this recipe is spot on:

If you are looking for the flagship microbrew style of the 90's, then find a good amber ale.

Without getting into brands, amber ales, porters and pale ales were more common than IPAs, imperial anything, or sours. Most everybody was making more basic styles. (plus it seemed like every brewer made a raspberry wheat) "Micro-brewed" lagers were also quite rare.
