My dad (who doesn't use BA) is in the Phoenix-Tucson area for a week and he is looking for some good brews. Plus, he doesn't mind being a mule for me. What are some good local/regional brews he should look for and what is available in cans or bottles for him to bring back home? From what I can see, La Cumbre, is not available there. Is that true? Thanks.
Four Peaks and Arizona Wilderness seem to have their fans in Phoenix. I've not been to Phoenix in 15 years so don't know there. If in Tucson, send him to Dragoon or to Tap & Bottle.
While not 100% accurate I suggest using seekabrew to see what is distributed here. Without mentioning any style preference you are leaving yourself wide open to a variety of opinions. La Cumbre is not distributed here, however Marble is and they make quality brews. I would probably throw in the mix Firestone, Odell, Ska, Alesmith, Four Peaks, Lumberyard, Grand Canyon, Papago, Huss, Hess, Green Flash, Epic, Elevation, Ninkasi, Logsden, and if growlers are an option Dragoon from Tucson. Best place in Tucson to shop is Plaza Liquor or Total Wine.
I'm not a fan of local beers compared to the other stuff brought in from other states. I'd stick with BigBelcher's recommendations (non-AZ ones) or maybe Bell's if you don't have Bell's in NY. Starting next week we'll have Alpine Beers from the San Diego area which have been hard to obtain in the past. The stores with good turnover will have very fresh Ballast Point Sculpin, Firestone Walker, and other great San Diego beers. I really like Ninkasi and Avery too.
