Have you ever picked up on honey for a beer brewed with honey besides Hopslam?

Depending on when it goes in, honey adds simple sugars and aromatics. If the aromatics remain, you think honey.

If someone made a beer with 2.5 lbs Buckwheat honey in 5 gallons, I can say with confidence you would say this smells and has flavors of Buckwheat - which is really strong.

Green Flash Palate Wrecker reminded me of Hopslam but substantially better, a bit cheaper, and I can almost always find it.

Charlotte's Birdsong Brewery has a beer called Honey Pie that is very close.

Problem is that I can't say that I have or have not had any other beers brewed with honey, so it's quite possible there's been some honey in a few that I've not noticed.

I didn't know at all the "Well..., it depends" information provided by @hopfenunmaltz and that would considerably increase the complexity of setting up some sort of systematic test to find out.

A great place to start would be DuPont Biere du Miel, it's unquestionably a honey flavored beer.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'll see if I can find one. (But notice, that now you've told me it won't be a blind test anymore. :-))

Damn autocorrect, I meant to say "may or may not be " instead of unquestionably .

    :-)

Not to worry, the name of the beer gives it away as well.

I think Trillium Cutting Tiles is worth comparing; it's made with wildflower honey. A lot more hop punch on the front end, though.

I have never had it, but I used to live outside DC and still get back there once in a while. I'll grab some next time I'm there. Ironically, I think every time I saw that beer while I lived there, I assumed it was a stout. Maybe I should have looked at the can more closely. :flushed:

Not an IPA but White Blaze Honey Cream Ale by Wolf Hills has a decent honey flavor to it.

Hop Ranch is excellent, but there's no honey character to it. Glad you mentioned it though, as more people should be exposed to it. Again, Balling the Queen has a similar honey profile, with a slightly thinner mouthfeel.

I agree with the Waldo's comparison. They have some similarities, although I preferred the Waldo's last year. On the other hand, I think The Oracle came across as more "West Coast" (I.e. aggressive and bitter). Thought it too was a great beer, and again, I prefer it to Hopslam.

And even though I prefer a lot of IIPAs to Hopslam, I am not going to jump on the Hopslam-hating bandwagon that is ever so popular. I can see how people really enjoy it. I also don't think the price is as egregious as most do. The hype has allowed for some mark-up, sure, but it really shoulder be ~$18/6pk. That comes out to three dollars a bottle. And I can't think of that many great imperial IPAs (especially at 10% abv) that are significantly cheaper. At a quick glance, most of the most (not highest) rated IIPAs on BA fall between $2.50 and $3 a bottle, if not more (sans the Lagunitas beers, which are typically a pricing anomaly).

Hey! Am I too late to dig this thread up again? I'm just trying Sierra Nevada's Tropical Torpedo IPA for the first time, and it's reminding me a LOT of Hopslam. Those same grapefruit-lemon-pineapple notes with the grassy, dank finish and the very biscuity malt balance.

I had kind of a revelation one day when I was drinking an Arcadia Hop Rocket DIPA. I should have done a side by side when Hopslam was available, but too late now. Hop Rocket can still be found on store shelves, and IMO the hops in Hop Rocket do not fade like Hopslam's hops do.
