Getting together with a few friends and doing a side-by-side with these 3 beers. wanted to know if anyone has any opinion on exceptional [non-barrel aged chili shouts] that are on the level of these three. I was thinking of throwing in an Oro negro into the mix but not sure how it compares. I have had bomb! next to Mexican Cake once and it paled in comparison.

I don't want to do more than 4 beers for our palates sake.

    thoughts?

I am a fan of Chocolate Sombrero by Clown Shoes. Xocoveza is also good, but may be difficult to find.

You have already set the bar pretty high with those three.
I would keep it at that.

I have had both beers multiples times and not to spoil your fun I'll just say Abraxas has always been the winner as far as my pallet is concerned.

I thought Canis Mexicanus was killer. If you are near Columbus anyhow.

Xocoveza, Malevolence Chocolate Caliente (Spiteful, good luck finding it), Vlad the Conquistador (Hailstorm). Of the 3 my favorite is probably Malevolence, but since Malevolence and Vlad are local, and Xocoveza isn't easy to find, this might be tough for you.

Edit: Vlad might not be up to your standards either, but it's hard to tell, since I prefer Malevolence to Abraxas (which I'm not sure is a popular opinion).

Mayan Mocha Stout from Odd Side Ales. Also the BB version. The regular is more spicy though. Spicy and sweet is my favorite flavor combination.

I would have to echo Xocoveza. I'm not sure how distro was in your area, but around me it's actually still sitting on shelves in some places.

Un mas chili Jesus and Mexican chocolate stout come to mind. Had a Mexican cake night before last, I don't get the hype. The base beer is ok, the adjuncts are not all well represented. I expected more from that beer.

Clown Shoes Luchador En Fuego is tasty, but it's barrel aged. For non-BA, I'd vote for Xocoveza too

I think you've already got the Mount Rushmore of "aztec/mexican" stouts there, OP. Nothing else you will find will quite match up to those three in terms of having the requisite ingredients (cinnamon, chocolate, peppers), being an imperial stout so the ABV/body are there and not being barrel aged.

All the other options have been mentioned, so instead of re-mentioning, I'll simply share why I don't think the others compare well (even if I personally like the beers better than any of the three you named):

    • Xocoveza - the coffee makes this beer great, but hard to compare directly to the other three. Same with the inclusion of nutmeg.
    • Xmas Bomb 2015 - the 2014 version doesn't work at all, because it contains "Christmas spices", whereas the new one is basically Bomb + cinnamon bark
    • Mexican Chocolate - I actually like this one better than one of three you named, but it's only 7% abv and that difference really shows when put up against the three you mentioned already
    • Mayan Mocha Stout - this one is similar to Xoco in that the coffee and nutmeg make it harder to compare to the other three, plus it's not imperial so much thinner than those three. But it's a fantastic beer...
    • BB Imperial Mayan Mocha - this is another one I like better than some of the beers in your three, but the barrel-aging adds a component that gives it an unfair advantage over the others
    • Prairie Bomb - to me, this one can't compete because it's missing the cinnamon, which is a huge component of this sub-style
    • Chocolate Sombrero - of all the ones listed, this is probably the most analogous comparison--imperial stout with the same additives, so if you must add a 4th, this is probably the best option. I still would stick to those three, personally...
    • Luchador en Fuego - the barrel-aged version of Chocolate Sombrero has the same problem as including BB Imperial Mayan Mocha, imho.

Just my 25 cents. I would also echo the request for you to do it blind and post the results here. I love reading that stuff!

To build upon what has already been said, you've already got the top tier of the style. I will throw one more option out that hasn't been said yet, which is Boulevard's Imperial Stout X - Aztec Chocolate, if you can still find it. Just as what @LambicPentameter stated above in regards to Chocolate Sombrero, Aztec Chocolate is an imperial stout with chocolate, cinnamon, and peppers added. While I liked Boulevard's take on the style better than Chocolate Sombrero, it paled in comparison to Mexican Cake and Abraxas (to me anyway). I'll also add that I think the barrel and coffee components of BB Imperial Mayan Mocha are a bit mellower than most, and I think it drinks more similarly to the big 3 than any of the other beers in the list above.

Please let us know your results. Doing a blind tasting of those big 3 beers is on my beer bucket list as this is probably my favorite style of beer!

Thank you all for your input. I will be doing a blind tasting. With at least Oro Negro on top of the 3 big ones. I will post the results.
    Cheers all

Oro Negro should definitely be included and I think if tasted blind, will rate very high and probably surprise. It is an exceptional beer and should be considered one of the very best non BA stouts.
