I know this type of thread irritates people, so I apologize in advance. However, my girlfriend has decided that this is her favorite beer in the universe, and given how hard it is to find, I'm hoping to find a go-to (or multiple) substitute.

I've had her try Abraxas, which is similarly of the "Mexican hot chocolate" style, but Abraxas is very coffee-forward and has some spice (heat) to it, neither of which she really likes (which is too bad, because there were just bottles of Abraxas sitting on the shelf). This year's Prop is sweet with some chocolatey-cinnamon to the body, coconut on the finish, and no coffee to speak of. Can anyone think of something somewhat similar?

    Cheers!

get your hands on some regular, buy a french press, and have her make her own with the flavors that she likes?
Get some dark chocolate nibs, a cinnamon stick, and toast some coconut.
    Thats what Im doing!

She liked prop so you had her try Abraxas...That seems kinda weird to me

Yeah, they have some similar qualities (the cinnamon, cacao nibs, etc.), so I was hoping she'd find something in Abraxas that she liked. Believe me, I'm aware they taste relatively different, but I was hoping she'd like what was going on in the Abraxas.

I'm afraid this isn't much help - but the only beer I've found similar to '14 Prop so far is BA Abraxas.

Stone Xocovesa has that cinnamon thing going on if you can still find it anyways.

Yeah, I haven't had BA Abraxas, but I was afraid this would be the case.

Double Barrel Huna... that should be easy to find. Not even in the same league, but without the BA factor you could try Stone Xocoveza, I kinda think that seems like a sorta similar taste profile. You could Cuvee this with some regular BCBS and see what ya get.

I love making "poor mans prop", Id suggest trying it with some cheaper base stouts at first to sight in your recipe, if anyone is curious about how to do it, feel free to BM me

It's also really good with other BBA Stouts - black note in particular.

I use a Dogfish Randall Jr. to make the 2013 "poor mans prop"

I toast 1/3c of coconut flakes til slightly browned, add 6 semi-sweet chocolate chips, and about 3/4" of madagascar vanilla bean chopped…add all ingredients to Randall, let sit in fridge for 2 hours - enjoy :grinning:

Yeah, I might end up doing this. If I have to turn to something like BA Abraxas or DBH to get something comparable, that's not gonna help much! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ive found best success with only pressing about 4-5 ozs of the beer, then re-add the rest of the bottle at the end. helps keep good carb while using a french press
