Inspiration for this post, 2013 FW Sucaba! Toffee Marshmellow Coconut Truffle. Age adds a Fudge component. Wholly Schitt this vintage is AWESOME!! Sticky, and more depth and body than the current 2015 Vintage. Less wood but oak still there. This is night ands day. I prefer my BCBS & BCBBW Fresh. This is the closest thing to a fresh BCBBW I've had, and possibly better. Maybe.

Admittedly, from my experience, most beers that "should" age well actually do not.

    I'll start:

Abyss - Do yourself justice and give the best by date another year. Hell. Black Butte Anniversaries as well

Speedway Stout - Less Coffe but a different beast altogether.

Parabola - I'd argue it's better aged but it's not. It's just equally as good but different.

Temptation & all of the "TION" beers from Russian River. 2009 Batch 4 Temptation I had recently is arguably the best beer I've ever had.

    Bigfoot - Duh

Double Bastard - 2 years WOW! Speechless.

    BOIS - Still fantastic!

Fellow BA's - share your tried and true. Help me search experiments that don't waste time & money.

    Cheers!

A few off the top of the old noggin:

    Hair of the Dog Adam
    North Coast Old Stock
    Bell's Expedition

Admittedly I haven't had these all that fresh to compare, but with a few years on them they're truly world-class shelf beers.

This is a great post idea...seeing as I struggle all the time with drinking an amazing beer and then try to cellar others but always wonder if it will get better.

Curious as to what others will say.

Anyone have anything to say about aging World Wide Stout?

Weird thing about that beer is that it teeters the Belgian Quad world with the imperial Stout land. I had a 2009 a year ago. Well done. From what "Sam says" give it 5-6 years.

I have one 2010 bottle in the beer fridge with a sticker I put on it (when I bought it fresh) that says "Do not drink until 2014 or later". All I can tell you is that its twin, which I drank in February 2013, was great. I've never had it fresh.

JW Lees Harvest Ale from 2007 was a ridiculous beast of a beer. Get one of those and stash it away for a long time. Trust me.

I find that BCBS does not change much with age. I had a 2008, 2013 and a 2014 together and couldn't tell much difference.

I disagree that 2013 did not benefit from aging. The first bottle I drank was fresh, and it was good, neh great, but incredibly boozy. I recently had one, and an amazing range of flavor notes had developed as the booze flavor receded a bit. Not that this beast doesn't still deliver barrel and bourbon, but it is a much better beer with a year and a half on it.

Of course, my palate likely changed as well, so YMMV.

Any time I've seen it in stores when it was just delivered it's been a year-ish after the bottling date. Does DFH bottle it and then sit on it for awhile before shipping it?

I have no idea. I have a record that I purchased these two in December 2010 but I actually don't know when they were bottled. I doubt they sit on them for anywhere near a year though.

I've had a few aged DFH 120's, 2 to 5 years, that were very, very good. I do find them to be a bit difficult fresh. The best though was a 3 year old GI Night Stalker. Amazing. Have two more from 2010 and 2012 in the fridge.

Had a bottle of '09 last year and it was amazing. The age really mellowed out the alcohol heat and the crazy sweetness to bring out a balanced brew with a very nice port characteristic to it.

Its hard to say since I usually drink the beers that I buy fairly quick, but I do have a 2014 KBS hanging around that I am waiting to try at the right time.

Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Barleywine is amazing with a 1-4 years on it.
I concur on The Abyss; a beer I'm indifferent to until at least a year.
Mother of All Storms, another OK beer fresh that morphs to world-class at 2-3 years.
Steel Toe Lunker, a local favorite, that's hot & a bit bland fresh, needs at least one year.
BA Blackout. At 1-2 years simply one of the best beers on Planet Earth.

I've been cellaring since 2008 & have found that I enjoy the vast majority of beers fresh, but there are a few exceptions like the above that I now seek out & cellar intentionally. Live & learn.

Brooklyn Monster holds up great. I have recently had an 08, 11 and 12 and all were fantastic.
