So I'm sitting hear enjoying a Tyranena devil over a barrel and I can't help but think how close it is to KBS. Anybody else have this one and think the same?

Without getting into which is better, I thought the same thing about Tyranena - Doubly Down 'N Even Dirtier. It was strikingly similar to KBS, with some mild differences. Was lucky to get one as an extra, awesome beer.

I personally tried KBS for the first time this year & I have to say, it's okay at best. I was able to score 5 bottles of this beer & I think BCBS is 100% better. I have 4 bottles up for trade. Honestly, KBS just isn't for me & I don't believe it's worth the hype. This is my opinion based purely on my own taste.

I thought this year's was pretty mediocre as well. The first year I had it, it was phenomenal, totally justified the hype.

I also don't think anything Tyranena makes is anywhere close to anything from Founders.

Peruvian Morning, when it's not infected (and if it's ever made again), is a good KBS alternative.

BCBCS is far superior to...probably every barrel-aged coffee stout I've had (except maybe Mocha Wednesday). It's also perhaps even harder to get than KBS.

Big Bad Baptist is pretty easily available, and they use different coffee and barrels every batch, which is cool.

I agree that BCBS was superior to KBS - was really disappointed by my first KBS, especially considering the hype and how hard it was to find compared to BCBS (I was also disappointed by Bell's Hopslam - these were probably my 2 biggest let downs of the year).

BCBS, however, was a lot easier to find/buy than BBB and KBS this year - I only got 1 of each BBB and KBS this year whereas it was relatively easy for me to find a case of BCBS this year (which I split between me and 2 other guys)

I actually like Breakfast Stout better then KBS, Speedway is my go to heavy stout. Speedway is usually available and not a bad price of around $14 for a 22oz bottle.

I'll echo some of the other sentiments, this years KBS was pretty lame compared to previous years. BCBS was much better to me.

BCBCS was way more "wow". I really love big bad baptist. I will pretty much always grab a bottle when a new batch makes it here. I kind of wish they did 12oz though.

25.4oz. (750mL), NOT 22oz. I see that mistake on here way too often.

You guys. Seriously. I dunno anything about Xantus or Tyranena, or Peruvian Morning, so take this with a grain of salt, but IMHO, the only beer similar to KBS I've ever had is BCBCS. I guess maybe Speedway Stout is fairly close, although I've never had any barrel aged versions. The issue with beers like FBS, and especially Big Bad Baptist, is that they're extremely coffee forward. I could barely drink Baptist because of all the coffee in there. BCBCS and KBS are amazing because the bourbon and stout flavors are not overwhelmed by the coffee; they are merely complemented.

I haven't cracked a KBS yet this year, but last time I had it on tap I maintained my opinion that BCBCS might be the best beer in the world, and KBS is just a hair behind.

But then I got some bottles of Bomb! in a trade, which rendered the point moot.

I find myself typing these words a lot lately...
Central Waters BA Stout. I'm seriously loving this beer. Very similar, IMHO.

Side note: a non-BA stout that I find similar to KBS is Evil Twin Biscotti Break the DeCicco version. The chili finish is what does it for me. I've only had it once and I'm aging one, but I taste some similarities.

Big Bad Baptist is on paper, but the batches vary greatly...probably related to the coffee they're using. That's especially the case with Denver batches vs. the ones from SLC. Some I've loved, others I've hated.

Lots of KBS bashing here so I'm going to offer an other side of the coin opinion. I like KBS more than BCBCS this year not because I think the beers are any different than last year, but because my tastes have changed. BCBCS is more everything. More coffee, more booze, more barrel. Simply put, it's more extreme tasting. This year I prefer the subtlety of KBS and it's chocolate note. I find it a much more enjoyable experience because it isn't hitting me over the head.

Having said that, even though they aren't coffee stouts, I find Black Note and Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout somewhat similar to KBS in terms of smoothness (dialed back from the extremity of BCBS). They have a little roasty going as well, just don't expect coffee.
