In an effort to further develop my pallet and hop tastes, I'd like to know a few of the more widely distributed beers that seem to "feature" a particular hop variety. Not necessarily single hope brews only, but those that after taking a sip you know exactly what hop is dominant. What is your beers seem to be heavy on the amarillo, cascade, chinook, simcoe...etc?

Im not good at this picking out Hops. I really need to work on it however, if you go through the list of the top IPA's/DIPAs you can find a lot with it in the name.

    Kern River Citra
    Weyerbacher Simcoe
    Hangar 24 Amarillo Pale Ale
    Mikeller Single hop series

    There are more.

    Cheers!

    old 21 = simcoe!

On a side note, I believe sixpoint does a series on tap only featuring the same base beer with different single hops. Sadly, the base beer blows salty nuts ;-(

Last year Sam Adams took their Latitude 48 IPA and offered a 12-pack with each of the hops used (I think it was 4) in that beer and single-hopped them into the other beers in the 12-pack so that you could experience the flavor of each as well as all combined. I enjoyed the experience. However, I have not heard if they will do it again this year. Seems to me it came out in early summer last year, so it should have been out by now if they kept the same schedule.

The Mikkeller Single-Hop series was mentioned above, and I tried two of them last year but did not think they were accurate flavors for what I know that particular hop to be.

Did you like Humming Ale? What flavors did you perceive from the Nelson Sauvin hops?

    Cheers!

Oh yeah, I definitely liked it last time around and have been meaning to get some of this year's version the next time I'm at the store. I passed it over the last two times, but not the next one! From what I remember, the hops leaned toward what I'd call a more 'noble hop' direction, spicy and floral, but had some fruitiness in there as well (kind of a lemony/kiwi thing). It was pretty unique and distinctive.

If you're really serious about learning different hop characteristics, it might be worth while to go down to your local homebrew store an pick up an ounce each of a handful of different varieties.

DuClaw has just come out with a series for their Anti-Venom with single hop strains. I have two bottles, but haven't had them yet. I saw the Mikkeller series on sale recently, but remembered they came out about a year ago, so I assume the hops would have faded to a point of not really making their point.
