I usually drink beer right out of the fridge and sip on it as it warms. Rarely is there a beer that as it warms it gets noticeably worse (with the exception of main stream BMC-type stuff). Most of the beers I enjoy are excellent right out of the fridge and either stay excellent, or get even better as they warm.

However, Tuesday night I had the unfortunate experience of having a beer that when cold was absolutely awesome and when warmer was terrible. I have never experienced such a huge difference between how much I enjoyed a beer at one temp. as opposed to another. Has this happened to any of you? And if so, what was the beer?

The beer this happened to me with was Stone Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean. I love the original Smoked Porter, it's my favorite Stone beer, so when I saw it with vanilla I was all over it. Again, it started out amazing, really something special. But then it just fell apart. The vanilla started tasting chemical-esque and the smoke wasn't helping the situation.

I find this to be the case with any exceptionally sweet beers, like Kasteel Bruin or the plethora of high-octane, barrel-aged Mikkeller atrocities.
Sometimes, as with copious layers of rouge on a syphilis-ridden courtesan, beer needs a little concealing to be enjoyed.

I find pretty much anything with a pronounced hoppy flavor (mostly IPAs, APAs, DIPAs, etc.) to be better straight out of the fridge.

Seeing as the average refrigeration temp is in the range of 35-38 F I don't think its a good idea to drink most quality beers straight from the fridge. I know I don't.

Anything from Samuel Smith. Their beers have an off metallic taste that is masked at colder temps.

Warmer temps can really punctuate the flavor of vomit in a bottle of Fantome.

    Most summer beers....

SN torpedo - warmth just brings out the cloying nature of the malt character making it difficult to drink.

Most SA beers - that unclean yeast profile is much more noticeable when warm.

Most Harpoon beers - same as above

Peak Organic - diacetyl seems more prominent when the beer warms.

Recently, Troeg's sunshine pils - I started to notice a little tartness when it warmed

I was going to say Raven Mad, but I don't think it tasted that great even when chilled.

I keep my beer fridge at about 40-45 degrees in the spring and summer and 45-50 in the fall and winter. I seem to get the best of both worlds. Not too cold at first and warm ups as the seasons dictate. I can never seem to wait for a beer to warm that much - it's too much of a temptation looking at it in the glass and it's worse if I don't pour it - all I can hear is "drink me".

Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Ale. I actually enjoyed it at a reasonably cool temp but when it got warm it was atrocious.

Dark Lord 2012. Holy Christ was that a sweet mess. Would have been better at fridge temp if that would have helped mute some of the sweetness.

I opened a bottle this past weekend with 3 other guys and thought the last sip was just as amazing as the first - it was one of those beers I didn't want to end. I'd say I drank my share over the course of 30 minutes or so. Not sure how much you had but if it was more than 1/4 bottle or if you lingered over it longer than I did then I'm sure yours warmed more than mine.
