Beers that pair well with Barleywines

    My friend and I are doing a tasting tonight primarily consisting of Barleywines (King Henry, MoaS, Abacus and Insanity) and are looking for some other beers that could pair well with these. Can anyone give me a suggestion or two on what style you would pair with these?

    I have no idea but I think Old Ale's and Strong Ale's would fit good with the Barleywine's

    I'd say old ales and stay away from hop bombs

    HOTD Adam, St. Bernardus abt 12, Westmalle Tripel, Samichlaus, and electrolyte beverages.

    Bravo to you for pairing beer with beer. Forget food.

    I would recommend a sour actually. A friend and I recently did a lineup similar to this along with a side by side tasting of CBS/KBS/FBS and the sours we used really helped to cut through any palette fatigue from the dark heavy beers. I think we used a Rose De Gambrinus and a Madrugada Obscura, but obviously anything will do. The Madrugada Obscura did fit the overall theme of the night quite well though.

    Another thought would be some really hoppy American Barleywines. Bigfoot, Behemoth, etc could help punch through those heavy dark fruit tones to give you a nice change of pace.

    I'd stay away from American hoppy barleywines unless they are all American hoppy barleywines. It just confuses the palette.
    English barleywines, old ales, strong ales, baltic/robust porters, and Russian imperial stouts. Honest Scotch ales could go in there too. My group does this 2 or 3 times a year.

    I say keep a few Old Raspys around and a couple Torpedos. Keep the palata guessing with flavor and using them sparingly to break up the BWs.

    I was actually thinking about this. We mixed in a sour/wild or two in our last tasting with some big bodied beers and it was a nice change of pace for sure.

    I have to agree with the sour recommendations. It's a good way to reset the palate.

    I just participated in a Stout Fest, mostly barrel-aged imperial stouts, and we put a few sours in there to break up the palate fatigue. Even though I'm not a big fan of sours, it worked well. I think Saisons would work too. Definitely take some water breaks.

    Another vote for a sour. A couple bottles of La Folie would make for a nice break.
