I am really getting into barrel forward non pastry stout/strong ales/barleywines. so I am trying to hunt down some beers that have been barrel aged for long time not including sours/saisons. below is some list of beers i can think of. Comments regarding any other additions, opinions, etc would be greatly appreciated. Fremont- ancient one set BCBS rare Alesmith - double barrel old ale central waters - ardea insignis
I'm not exactly clear on the intention of this thread, but acquiring most of those would require some serious trades. If you're gonna trade, Jackie O's Bourbon barrel stouts and barleywines are awesome. Sometimes they age their beers up to 18 months.
10 Barrel Paxton Project spent 4 years in Port barrels. Bonus for those who care: it was brewed in 2012, pre-ABI.
Hoppin frog has an Extended BA BORIS that was aged 5x longer than regular BA boris. I'm assuming that has to be 2 years plus. The beer is amazing.
Look for the Bruery's Chronology series. They take the base beer, put it into barrels and bottle it at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months later.
Though I liked it, since they don't say the exact time I'm thinking it's under two years, maybe 15 to 20 months. I'd think they'd brag up the years instead of saying "5x" if it were two or more years.
Utopias plays a mean game of 2 year booze barrel bingo. I've got a half bottle of the 2105 vintage, and if you can run up on an ounce or two of that, it's worth a try. And Black Friday is sneaking up on us.
Utopias is rather difficult to find here. Hmm i have always been interested in Black friday, but i heard it causes diabetes/
I think he's referring to the actual day where they release BCBS. Black Tuesday is a beer, you might be able to find Black Tuesday Reserve, which is double barrel Black Tuesday. Black Tuesday is a VERY sweet beer, but absolutely delicious. I'm a big fan of the Scytale stouts by Great Basin Brewing, it's a sleeper for sure.
Ah thanks. my brain was occupied with the report i am writing, so i misread black friday for black tuesday lol. I have never heard of great basin brewing. Did a quick googling and scytale stouts seem to have many variants with different numbers, (404, 412,385 etc). Any recommendation on those?
The numbers are how many days each vintage spent in barrels, so you will probably be most interested in the 808 vintage which I believe was the 2016 release. I only know this because I snagged a bottle of the 412 2017 release through a mail order company called Tavour, but haven't drank it yet.
I've had the 385 and the 412, they're lacking a bit in the mouthfeel department but the flavors are up there with some of the best.
What you're looking for is Jackie O's, just about everything they BBA. Noble Sorel is 17 months for an ale, then all their Stouts and BW's are minimum 1 year, but very barrel fwd. Some of my absolute favorites because of it.
I'll echo the other that have said Jackie O's. Just had black tuesday a few nights ago and it was an intense amount of barrel also (I actually compared it to bb dark apparition in my review).
Black Gold is claimed to be 3 year aged. I like where you are going. I would be curious to try a 5 year aged stout.
Hair of the Dog does a lot of beers that sit in barrels for a VERY long time. Adam from the Wood, Fred Flanders to name a couple
not sure how long it was aged, but north coast cellar reserve was very barrel forward. I've had the 2013 I believe. The other one that jumps out was lagunitas high westified....good timing that it appears the a willitized version should be out soon.
