I also think SN Torpedo tastes a lot like Arrogant Bastard.

Pretty much all Anchor Brewing beers have a similar taste on the finish because they use the same yeast strain, or at least that's what I remember hearing, in almost everything they make.

I sincerely hope you get out and try some more. Your answer could be markedly different. Cheers, @keithmurray.

Or use those basic ingredients and ferment at different temperatures (per batch) for a vast Multitudes of Off Flavor Complexity. :sunglasses:

Off flavored the new beer frontier. Could happen. Maybe vomitorium holds the key. I haven't found an off flavor I could get into yet

Some of the high end hefeweizen are very similar. Given the style an dmost being from Germany, not surprising. We also think many mid-range porters are pretty much six, one-half dozen or the other. Bock beers are hard to differentiate.

Agree with the thread on the IPA range, but there's wider deviation in that style.

Make them subtle and soft. I'm not talking abrasive Off Flavors, just enough that would meld with the flavors existing but enough for the drinker to say...."Hey! This Wheat Beer is different from this Wheat Beer!

I found Obsidian to be much more bitter and coffee-like, while Black Butte was smoother and easier drinking. But yes, both excellent examples of related styles.

All IPA's taste similar? I find that wildly incorrect. Harpoon IPA tastes nothing like SN torpedo for example. Different amount of sweetness/dryness, different yeasts, malts, hops, dry hopping, piney vs tropical hop profiles overall.

So many IPAs are similar. Also, it may be a coincidence, but Westvleteren 12 and St. Bernardus 12 tastes almost the same.

That's because they pretty much are the same beer. Westvleteren 'expanded' in the 50s or 60s where most of the beer sold outside the monastery was contracted out to another brewery they set up. Same recipe and yeast. In the 90s the naming license ended and they decided to put the beer under the name St. Bernardus. I'm sure 50+ years of brewing in a different location, different water supplies, equipment, bottle conditioning/techniques, etc causes slight differences between the two. So they are kind of the same beer, but not quite.

Yikes, I guess you don't get out much? British, west coast, east coast, single hop , fresh hop, wet hop?

Really? Flipside Red IPA and Hop Hunter are fundamentally different beers. One is vegetal, earthy, and gnarly, the other is piney, citrusy, and easy.
