I've had this conversation with a couple DFW guys and I've said I was going to post this on here for quite awhile, so here it goes.

I have skipped over tons of beer readily available to us in Texas, I've skipped over most Belgians. Today when Chad posted Brasserie d'Achouffe brewer was coming to BTBF I had to think long and hard... Maybe I've had N'Ice but nothing else from them. It will be a treat to try the beers they bring that day, hopefully I'm able to get off into more Belgians in the meantime. I've also skipped over most of the lineup from Moylan's, Flying Dog, Ommegang and Twisted Pine among many others that I just can't think of.

Over the past year one of my go to's to start my night off with is Lava Lake Wit from Crazy Mountain. Yes it's a 77 on here... who the fuck wants to drink a beer thats rated a 77? I think most Wit's are boring, unoriginal wastes of time. Give this one a try if you like Chamomile because they use a shit ton of it in this wit, I find it delicious.

I'd also recommend these: He'Brew Messiah Bold if you want peanut toffee; Éphémère (Apple) apples and Belgian yeast; OPA - Oatmeal Pale Ale I'm not happy with these guys right now but it's interesting and worth a try.

So what are some beers that you like that aren't highly rated and you feel people skip over? What are the brands that you haven't given a fair shot so hopefully others can recommend beers from them to you?

    Drink Up,
    -Matt

I like the Widmer Citra Summer during hot summer days. Nice citra flavor and goes down too easy!

Good topic. One brewery in particular that I have been passing up lately for one reason or another, but I always love is North Coast. Scrimshaw is a great Pils, Brother Thelonious has was one of my first wow type beers, Le Merle, and of coarse Old Rasputin.

Anchor is another one that comes to mind. Anchor Steam, Old Foghorn, and OSA are great though I always seem to pas them up as well.

I don't think I have ever picked up any Boulder, come to think of it, I am not sure if it is in Texas. Though I come across them a lot when I travel, but still never seem to pick any up.

You do yourself a disservice! So, so good. Try the 15th Anniversary if you haven't.

Clown Shoes and Schmaltz seems to get passed up quite a bit, and they have quality offerings.

im not really sure i'm in line with your thread, but weihenstephaner stuff gets just completely disregarded in the stores i go to.

their kristalweiss and hef are crazy good, inexpensive, great summer beers for texas, and i don't think that many people realize it. the bottles languish forever on shelves.

i'm guilty of passing right by them for inferior beers too.

For no reason in particular, I usually pass on Left Hand Brewing's beers. The other day a guy at the store emphatically recommended the Barrel-Aged Wake Up Dead, so I got one, almost begrudgingly. I was very pleasantly surprised. And that beer is only a 77 here. I thought it was super delicious.

I do have to say my initial reaction was that it was too bourbon-forward. After about 10 minutes it was phenomenal.

You really should give their Small Batch 4 a try if you like Bourbon Barrel Smoked Porters. It's damn good. They are a distillery as well as a brewery and they use their own whiskey barrels to age their beers. And their whiskey is top-notch. They also make an Oatmeal Pale Ale that I've only seen on tap, but is maybe one of the best Pale Ales I've ever had. Super hoppy. They are doing good things down there.

I've been continuously disappointed by their ventures, so I'll probably keep skipping over them.

I think this is the case for a lot of the better German beers. Weihenstephaner, Ayinger, Erdinger, etc, etc.

I know for me, I dont even LOOK at the Belgian/German/English etc. section at the store, which is probably a mistake on my part. I also tend to overlook Ommegang, Clown Shoes, Deschuttes (except for the specials) and Great Divide.

I've often been guilty of passing up world-class imports, especially Belgians. Belgian styles don't appeal to me the way they used to, but I still enjoy them immensely on the rare occasions that I drink them. There are also several British and German beers that I really enjoy but continuously pass up for American brands.

I've found that I really like going beer shopping with my wife because she will pick up really random-ass beers simply because she likes the label/bottle, and she's picked some real winners that way. Notable ones are Nethergate Old Growler (she loves porters, and also bulldogs) and Sterkens Yeast Hoist. Both are beers that I never would have bought on my own, and they were both exceptional.

I fully agree about Shmaltz. I've had some excellent beers from them, but they seem to be tragically overlooked in stores.

    Great topic Matt.

I think us beer geeks tend to pass on some phenomenal Sam Adams beers. Their Winter Lager was one of my favorite releases this winter, and I don't really like/drink lagers that much. This beer is much cheaper than a lot of the crap we buy too.

I think a lot of hop heads tend to not appreciate the porter and stout styles enough. I think beers like Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Left Hand Milk Stout, 512 Pecan porter and Green Flash Double Stout are not appreciated by enough craft beer drinkers.

Beers I pass on are usually all year-round brews. My thought is that I can get them on tap somewhere or get a growler of them if need be. I am also guilty of passing on pretty much any imported beer, unless it is a tasty Belgian sour.

Widmer Citra Summer, Le Merle, Ommegang 15th, Old Growler and believe it or not... Green Flash Double Stout, which I've traded away, are all beers I haven't had a sip of but plan to drink this year.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Other than Sucks, Lagunitas. For some reason, I stay away from any bomber under $5, which is utterly ridiculous. Hop Stoopid and Cappucino Stout are fantastic beers at that price.

    No Nor Cal? No Hopsickle?!

DFH is one for me. I love Burton Baton, but I buy about a 4 pack a year. The rest either burnt me out from back in my heavy drinking days or I don't want to gamble on. DFH likes to make us pay for their experiments which are extremely hit or miss or miss or miss. Plus they made the awful mistake of cutting Squall from their lineup to sell the awful 75 Min.

Honestly, I have so much beer at home and have tried so many things that I skip over a lot of things. I do try to revisit old favorites now and again.
