True story, gave my brother half of a haul of Westy and he was completely indifferent to/about it. His opinion was basically "that's it?" Given what it cost me, I should have killed him.

Quite the contrary for myself. I actually learned how much of a beer geek my cousin's husband is. He was pleasantly surprised when I showed up with a bottle of BCBS. Also learned that my other cousin is a pretty big hophead now. Very good news.

But to echo some of the things people are saying, I really don't know why people are shocked when non craft drinkers dislike big beers like bcbs, fbs, DIPA's, etc... None of us burst onto the craft scene drinking these. We started with the SNPA's of the world and worked our way to where we are now. I've gotten about two dozen too many "this is pretty good" responses from my friends to bother giving them anything too luxurious anymore. I stick to sharing the good shit with my gf, who ended up trying her first two stouts last night (Mean Old Tom and Oak Aged Yeti) and actually enjoyed them alright.

I learned to stop offering my girl beers she wont like (namely IPAs, malty reds, or anything not a coffee heavy creamy milk stout). Im hating the moment I open my Zhukov with her. SHell love the hell out of it.

I do wanna try a bottle of it. I know they had bottles in Pittsburgh, but i was too interested in trying my friends Rauch marzen and Pumpkin porter to worry about some nitro milk stout (doh).

At least it isn't hard to finish a whole bottle of that by oneself! My brother and I would do that all the time in Belgium

I don't necessarily get shot down. I usually keep some kind of lager, pilsner or pale ale on hand for those who prefer macro. (I've never had a macro drinker pass up free beer.) Most of my family is pretty open minded when it comes to beer (and alcohol in general) but not everyone is always in the mood for a big beer. I always keep some variety on hand whenever I'm hosting some get together.

Just this weekend I offered people who were drinking bud lite and MGD--anchor porter, celebration, Sierra Nevada porter, rochefort 10, and alaskan smoked porter. Two out of about THIRTY PEOPLE actually drank some good beer when given the chance. I now have a lot of leftover beer. AWESOME leftover beer...

Of those two that drank the offered beer one tried and loved all of it, and claims to have been converted, and the other only tried the anchor porter, and said it was too bitter, and would stick to MGD.

In 2010, I had a one liter growler fill of Stone IRS 2005, and I had only my girlfriend to share it with. She took like three sips and left her glass sitting and abandoned. It's ironic, because two years later and now she'd jump to have a beer like that...

I just turned down Bolt Cutter so I could buy it for a friend. One bottle limit. For my sacrafice he got me two 4-packs of Heady straight from the brewery.

One of my BA buddies doesn't get out much for adult activities. . .

Recently he had to turn down:
HF growlers of Simcoe, Riwaka, S&S#5, Ephraim
Bruery Humulus Wet, Smaak, Bourbon Barrel Autumn Maple, White Chocolate, Chocolate Rain, Black Tuesday
    Furious, Knuckle Sandwich, IST

    to name just a few. . .

Now as far as non BA's go, I always try and keep it tame. Coors Light drinkin' in law said Stella Artois, Rolling Rock and Olympia tasted like 'deer piss' and literally spit it out/into the air. I tried, and I wasn't even wasting pearls on swine. . .

My good friend and roommate for 3 years who by his own callings likes "Bud Light, Miller Lite and everything in bewteen". Scoffs at anything dark (Does like Negro Modelo and Guiness Black Lager though). Never able to convert him, even with KBS, Pumpkin beers etc... He's coming into town next week and I'm already preparing the Negro Modelos for him, not buying Bud/Miller Light incase I end up having to drink a couple.

Yes, you have a point, and I agree with most of this, but.... Anytime I describe or mention say, how rare a beer is that I'm offering or something like that, even non "craft" drinkers normally are curious about it. Even BMC guys that don't like "dark" beer.

And, as many have mentioned, most are quite happy to NOT share the awesome beer they are offering. But at least they offered.

you dont' have to come across as pretentious just because you enjoy craft beer, although many do of course.

Went over to a friends place a couple weeks ago for a guys night. He is relatively new to drinking (dont ask me why) and he is trying to figure out what beers he likes. Brought two cans of Heady Topper over for him to try. My other friend, I knew, would love it., which he did. But my other friend, sipped it once and was almost mortified. Now I am a big believer in "to each his own," but this was not what I was expecting at all. It was pretty funny to me, actually. No skin off my back...more for me

I had the same reaction the first and only time I tried Pumking a couple of months ago. It's not your friend, it's the beer. Glad you like it, though.

If people don't ordinarily drink craft, I don't offer things that don't come in six-packs. I have enough trouble converting people with milder stuff like Celebration that pouring them Ruination doesn't benefit either of us.
The one that stings for me is homebrew. Really, you won't even taste it? Do you not trust me?
