So, unknowingly while planning a surprise Belgium trip for my father's 60th birthday, I booked part of the trip over Whitsun 5/19 and Whit Monday 5/20? Being from the US, I am not familiar with these holidays and was wondering if you can clue me in. Does the whole country shut down during these days? Are we out of luck finding an open brewery or beer bar or even a restaurant? Had already planned on De Dolle for the English tour on Sunday, but that's out the window. Thanks for your help...

On a related note, what about Ascension Day? Will bars and restaurants be open then?

jup, restaurant and bars are always open here as far as I know. they would be stupid to close when everyone has a day off :stuck_out_tongue:

I had asked this in my Belgium thread when I heard that Cantillon will be closed for Ascension Day. Hopefully several pubs will open on these days, ready to take my money and liver!

Was there last year and saw the parade in Bruges. Just about everything will be open.

On these holidays bars and restaurants are normally open. Shops, offices, etc. (like Cantillon) are normally closed. It is mainly handled as a Sunday - what is open on a "normal" Sunday should be open on these holidays as well.
    :-)
