Beertunes is the man to speak to, when it comes to all things Bellingham. However, I'd say the short answer is yes, most definitely.
Yes, Bham is an awesome town, especially for its size. Fantastic restaurants and beer bars. Also, make sure you have a passport, cause Vancouver is only an hour away and it's an amazing city.
Nope, nothing to drink here at all, you'll die of dehydration. Shoot me a message and we'll discuss in detail.
From Boston to Bellingham? Good god, prepare yourself for some West Coast small town culture shock, sir. Also, Boundary Bay and Chuckanut will keep your beer urges satisfied, along with some of the newer brewers in town. Rudy's for pizza, Diego's for burritos. Rinse, lather, repeat.
You did not just suggest he go to Rudy's for pizza, did you? Bham is a bit of a pizza wasteland (our biggest flaw, IMHO, along with our complete failure to use turn signals on our Subarus), but Rudy's is the worst. Might as well put the sauce and toppings on the box. But yeah, Boundary, Cnut, Kulshan, Wander, Menace, North Fork, Aslan and the 2 new breweries due to open in the spring, all make solid-to-great beer. The Local, Copper Hog, Up&Up, Green frog, and Das Schwien Haus all rotate taps with dizzying frequency. And there'll soon be a new place with 30 taps opening. I think OP will be OK up here in The City of Subdued Excitement.
Haters shall hate, and I will eat Rudy's pizza any day. Although the amount of garlic in the crust will ruin your breath for 24 hours, this is true.
I think the adjustment in his cost of living will help take some of the sting out moving away from Beantown.
Man, we've had completely different Rudy's experiences. Don't know when the last time you had it was, but sometimes I need an emergency slice while at the Up. Bland and flavorless. I wish there were some garlic. I just wonder what OP is doing for a gig when he gets here. Teaching up at Western? Selling software at Logos bible software? One of the refineries? I haven't figured out the jump, unless he's a boarder, and wants to shred Baker?
I had a choice to overnight in Vancouver B.C. on business or head down to Bellingham and overnight there. It was a no brainer. Kulshan IPA was my reward And I will play the guess the occupation of the OP here. I am guessing beet farmer.
I dunno, man. I lived there from 2002-2007 and lived off Rudy's personal size pizzas, BCRs from Diego's, and Scotch Ale from Boundary. Related note: I was a fatty back then. But yeah, white collar jobs are few and far between in that shitty burg of a town. The flipside is that you can find insanely low rents if you look hard enough.
Dude, I'm paying $600 for a tiny, crappy, studio apartment. 1br apts start at 700+. Lots of retired folks, and Californians moving out of Cali, have really driven prices up. This isn't a cheap town to live in. On the other hand, it's not a crappy town at all. The people are great, and the amount, and variety, of things to do are stunning. Add in the fact that you're less than 2 hours away from 2 major cities, just adds to it. There's plenty of white color gigs, but damn little for a blue collar guy like me. Logos just changed their name, but they're now the second biggest employer, after WWU, in the city. Three large buildings downtown.
Just wanted to mention a conversation I had earlier today. Wander came up in discussion and the other person said, "If we're not careful, Wanders gonna be the best brewery in the state." I couldn't really disagree. For a brewery that's still less than a year old, they are just knocking stuff out of the park. A nice variety of styles, all very well done. No clunkers yet.
