There is a good chance this has been released at some point under a different name (Experimental,Larry's Latest or a rather generic style driven name).

I was thinking this too, but tasting it now, it is more malty than any of the experimental hoppy stuff I've had at the brewery in recent months. The only thing it kinda reminds me of is the Larry's Latest DIPA Trial from late 2013 and the Imperial Red Ale currently at the Cafe, both of which I like much more than this one.

Good palate. According to their description (http://www.bellsbeer.com/planets/mars/), Mars is, or at least was developed from, Larry's Latest. Not sure why you wouldn't like Mars as much though, if it's essentially the same beer.

It's definitely similar but Mars has more malt to it. The Larry's Latest DIPA had a good clarity, was ruby red, and was more tropical than pine in flavor than Mars, at least to me. In fact I liked it so much I made sure to back several times before they ran out at the brewery. When I read Mars was going to be a DIPA I thought,"I hope it's that ruby red DIPA they had on before.". I was mostly right.

Drank Mars about 12 hours after I bought, tasted like fresh grapefruit DIPA.

Now, week and days later starting to turn over to that Barleywine flavor...

    Anyone else notice this?

This is a balanced DIPA, nowhere near as malty as some would like to make it out to be. The drop off in this beer is not substantial at this point. Still very balanced, hops are still very prominent.

While we can all agree that this is a balanced, or "malty" DIPA, there is not nearly enough malt to even come close to a Barleywine. I love hyperbole just as much as the next guy but any suggestion comparing this beer to a barleywine or claiming it has fallen off that far already is a bit ridiculous.

Sorry, but Bell's doesn't distribute to MA. If you're in western MA then hop over the border into NY and see if it is there.

I'm trying to get better at identifying hops, anybody got any guesses what's in Mars? The aroma is very tropical with some pine to me so maybe something like Citra, Galaxy, or Nelson?

No I totally agree with you. I dont know if the bottles weren't stored properly, but the ones i had 2 weeks ago tested great. My local spot got another 2 cases on Friday. and I drain poured the first one and gave the second one away to a friend. It was a straight malty bomb. I think it was probably due to poor storage, but gahhhh.

I'm not a hophead, but even I thought Mars was outstanding. It had a *huge* malt backbone that counterbalanced a very pleasant, citrus (orange) hoppiness. I expected a stereotypical DIPA (i.e. hop syrup) and got more of a big, flavorful single IPA instead (think CCB Jai Alai). It certainly was not a barleywine, however (mine was less than one month old). I really enjoyed it.
