DFH 120 is in its own category and calling it an IPA is a gross understatement. That's like saying that fonefan on RB (a.k.a. most epic ticker ever for those who are new here) enjoys trying a new beer occasionally.

And that is the beauty in beer... Everyone enjoys different things. I have the exact opposite feelings. I Loved Oracle, especially fresh, tastes great. Mars wasn't bad fresh, but overpowering in malt. I have like 3 more bottles to drink now and will see how it sat for a month.

I age IPA just for shits n giggles. Have a '12 Exp Hoppiness and a 1/5/10 Hopslam. We shall see.

Had a Mars last week, was ok. Won't be trying Uranus though.

Ok so based on this thread I chilled and cracked a Mars last night, bad idea. This beer has fallen of dramatically. While I thought Oracle was better side by side in Aug Mars has become a huge malt bomb in less than two months. Nose still has plenty of hops by my plans of trying all of the planet series beers together seem to be lost:slight_frown:

had a friend bring me some from a place in brooklyn, thought it was a solid DIPA, wouldn't buy it again though.

Had it at about a month old. Hops were showcased quite nicely to me

I liked it on draft at the Cafe.

    Edit - it was fresh

This. I've had a big problem with a lot of the high volume DIPAs from Bells, and having high hopes for this one, I was sorely disappointed. Malt bomb for sure, but don't forget about the intense booziness of it.

It's out now at the Bell's General Store as well as on tap at the Cafe (as of several day ago), and there are reports that it is already hitting some stores here in Michigan. I'm going out looking for it today.

I'll probably ruffle some feathers with this comment, many are unable to discern the difference between any sort of sweet flavors and overall maltiness. On top of this, any semblance of balance in a hoppy beer will almost certainly be called a "malt bomb". Fair or not, I tend to disregard most peoples opinion once they use the term.

Mars was certainly a malt forward DIPA, but not nearly the malt bomb people wanted to make it out to be fresh. You got the default comparison to Barleywines, not nearly accurate. The tropical, sweet hop profile did enhance the general sweetness of the beer and I believe lead many to a false sense of maltiness. At this point the late addition hops have certainly subsided, I will buy that some mentions of a malt forward profile are valid. I believe the beer is still rather pleasant, was more enjoyable upon release.

Hit Kalamazoo on Thursday, already gone at a couple stores. General Store is always the best bet if you're in the area.

My understanding is the reason it is so late in NC was the time required to get label approval. That red tape is sticky.

I completely agree. I have also never understood the comparison to a barleywine. Aged or not, the malt profile in almost every DIPA is completely different from that of a barleywine.

Ah, that's unfortunate, not fair to the beer to be hamstrung like that.
