Getting excited about my annual trip to Bend. I know the fest isn't great for trying a bunch of rare beers and what not. But I think it's a blast, and I get to try a bunch of stuff I never see in Northern CA.

    Anyone else going? Cheers!

Yes! And my wife and I are really looking forward to it, too. Went to Bend over Memorial Day weekend 2012 for the first visit in almost 6 years - man, a lot had changed in the beer world down there!

Glad we can go again this summer for Brewfest (never been to that fest before): staying 2 nights and hoping to go to a few of the breweries we missed last year (including a couple that weren't even open then). Also, it'll be good to meet up with some friends who moved there recently and a buddy who's hiking the PCT from border to border and will be passing through that weekend...

It's a really fun fest. The location is great, and it's really well run. Like I said, they aren't going to have any crazy rare beers, but it's a great place to try different stuff. They are having some ciders that look interesting too. We also are going to try to visit some breweries, I didn't make it to Crux last time, so that's on the list. And Boneyard is always must for me to grab a couple of growlers to take home. Plus last year Boneyard had a couple of barrel aged beers on tap I'm sure were in preparation for the Little Woody.

That's great you know someone who is doing the PCT, I wonder if he's made it through my neck of the woods yet? The PCT crosses through my part of the state in quite a few areas within an hour or so of town.

I'm not expecting anything too crazy either, just good weather, good beer and time with our friends! We stay Thursday & Friday nights... but will hang out a long while on Saturday, too.

We missed Crux last year, too. We did Boneyard, but didn't get any growlers (can get a fairly good supply of Boneyard here in Portland). Also, I'm trying to arrange a visit to The Ale Apothecary, which is a few miles west of town & by appointment only.

Actually, he just went through Mt. Shasta this past Tuesday (hit the 1500 mile mark earlier in the day)!

I'm tentatively thinking of going this year. The GF will be out of town anyway that weekend, so it's the perfect weekend for me to get away.

I can't go on Thursday, but am thinking of possibly driving up Friday and heading back on Saturday. Or I may just drive up for the day that last Saturday. Is there any benefit to going on Friday, as opposed to just driving up on Saturday? By that I mean, do they tend to run out of stuff that last day, and are the any other brewery events taking place that weekend that I'll miss out on if I just head up there on Saturday?

I haven't been up to Bend in nearly 20 years, so I'm very curious to see what it looks like now.

My friend did Ale Apothecary earlier this year. Said it was very cool, a tiny place with spendy and tasty beers.

I wonder if your friend made a pit stop at the Etna Brewery? I know quite a few thru hikers will stop there since it's very close to one of the trailheads. It's just a town about 35 miles west of Mt. Shasta.

I can't go until Friday myself because of work. In the past, it's not really a big deal which day you go. They do have something they call "x-taps", and they change from day to day. They are basically the more limited or special beers (like BA stuff), and I believe they require 2 tokens instead of one. The only benefit I can think of on Saturday is the hours are longer. We usually stop by for a bit on Friday night, but spend most of our time there on Saturday afternoon.

It's a lot of fun, and if you haven't been to Bend in years, you are going to be stunned.

He's very adept at finding breweries along the way, so chances are good that he found Etna. By the way, he is being "sponsored" by Hopworks (they outfitted him with all sorts of shirts and stickers and stuff, plus several cases of beer before he started the PCT in April)... and his "trail name" is "Hops"!

Very cool! You'll have to ask him if he made it to Etna. It is one of the most out of the way breweries I've ever been too.

I'm volunteering this year on Thurs and plan to be back over the weekend too. Probably won't know where I'll be pouring until day of, but would like to meet up with anyone visiting for the fest. BM me if you're interested.

It would be cool to meet some PNW BeerAdvocates up there. I'll probably be making a quick stop there on Friday night, and then spending quite a few hours there on Saturday afternoon/early evening.

Is this held the same weekend every year? I'm thinking I might start putting my pennies away for next year.

I'm pretty sure it is always right around the middle of August. And it is well worth your pennies.

Any excuse to visit Bend. I was thinking about the Deschutes ride earlier this year, but I haven't been riding much this year. Maybe next year for that too.

    Thanks for the post!

Hmmm.... a decent tap list, but there sure is a lot of the "same old, same old" stuff on that list as well. The X-tap line-up looks pretty interesting, and I suspect that' where I'm going to spending a lot of my time.

As for your last question, my evening (saturday) is pretty much free after the fest. I hope to hit some of the different breweries/brewpubs in the area, but I'd be happy to meet up with any other BA's who will be in the area that evening.

This is my first time at this event, and I'm only vaguely familiar with lineups at Portland festivals, but my sense is that the appeal of this fest is not the walez lineup, but the setting and the casual vibe, with a few special treats thrown in. Flexabull has said he's up for meeting some other BA's, so I think we should try for something on Sat night.

Which is completely fine (IMHO). That's the appeal of OBF as well, a fest I never miss (and one that never disappoints, at least for me). It was just an observation... like the OBF, this sounds like the sort of fest to stop by, try a few different things, enjoy the venue and the day, and then head off to visit Boneyard, Good Life, Deschutes, or whatever.

I don't know the Bend area very well, but if you guys pick a time and spot, I'll definitely stop by to say hi! Cheers!

That is why this will be my 3rd time at the brewfest.

Good beer, lots of choices, very nice venue, usually the weather is perfect, and it's really well run. Plus the people are very friendly, I've only seen a few idiots there.

If we get a spot nailed down we will let you know John. Might just meet up somewhere at the fest.

    Either is fine. No worries.
