The Tap (aka Haverhill brewing) now bottles their Berliner and it's $5 a bomber I think. Any $9 Berliner bottles you see from White Birch are old because they lowered their price on their beers recently.

Absolutely the best, and from what I have read it is equally traditional to have brett in Berliner Weisse.

Traditional or not this is easily the best Berliner Weisse I have had.

Has anyone here ever flavored their Berliner Weiss? What syrup did you use?

Raspberry Torani, various Polish fruit syrups and grenadine.

That's true. Although no-one noticed the Brettanomyces until quite recently

“1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness.
It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. “1809” will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways.
“1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18°C (64°F).

Touche. I was just clearing up any confusion about Yogi's comment (I lol'ed, I admit it.) For the record, dollar limits on beer you want to drink is ******ed. Homebrewing Berliners has to be the most cost effective option, OP should give it a go.

I'm sure you're right, but it appears that the OP is looking to dip his toes in a style he's not even sure he'll like without spending more than he has to. So maybe homebrewing a 5-gallon batch to keep his price per ounce down isn't the best strategy right now. If I were the OP I'd just bite the bullet and pony up the money for a few of the best ones that are readily available in his area, then go from there.

Sorry, but that's just bullshit. A good example of a meaningless use of the word "traditional".

I repeat, 1809 is nothing like a Berliner Weisse would have been in 1809. How do I know this? Because I've been arsed to research the style properly and have read 19th century German sources.

Fair enough. You can only believe what you read. Glad to know someone is out there getting it right.

Now that I know who he is I see you are right Cave Dave. He has actually probably forgotten more about beer then most of us unwashed wanna-be's even think we know. My apologies Mr Perkins. You are the man!

We should have a poll on which ‘super hero’ has the best pseudonym: Barclay Perkins or Jess Kidden!
