I'm guessing Berliner Weisse accounts for less than 1% of craft beer sales in the USA.

Isn't Cigar City putting out a bunch of Berliners as well?

CCB has been putting quite a few out, great too for the miserable heat down here. 7venth sun in Dunedin, FL also makes some great berliners.

I probably should have read the article more thoroughly. Missed the mention, my bad.

Ahh Adam, your love for Berliners makes you crazy sometimes! Just be happy they mentioned them since most people out there have never even heard of them let alone tried them. You should come back down to Florida and try all the delicious Florida Weisses we have. This weekend alone I had 5 different wonderful brews from J. Wakefield brewing, plus countless other at the Cajun Cafe Sourfest. Also, my favorite is a wonderful Mango Berliner from Daniel Raynes at Special Hoperations, it is amazing! Rapp Brewing Gose and CCB Stiftung, Westbrook and NG Berliners, all so good. We're getting spoiled down here with Florida Weisses!

Fritz Briem 2009 vintage that is on the shelves right now beats any us examples I have had.

I tip my hat to you guys for not only bottling your berliner but also making several different fruited versions. That is worth getting excited about. I admittedly might have come off a bit harsh in my post and for that I apologize. This was a thread created to stir up some conversation and I am glad to read and appreciate your point of view.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that I dont cringe at Berliner getting mainstream publicity, I cringe at it being somewhat misleading. If the purpose of the article was to inform a broad audience, why not go about it in a more accurate way? Berliner Weisse is far from forgotten, it is picking up steam and becoming increasingly popular. Some others would even argue that Betliner is going to be the "next big thing" in beer since it can appeal to a wide audience. The context of the article makes it seem like craft brewers and drinkers dont care about the style because you cant walk into any bottle shop and pick and choose between a bunch of different berliner offerings. Trust me, when the day happens that i have too many berliners to pick from, I will be one happy camper. I personally have been fluffing the berliner style since I joined this site.

You are correct, I dont know the Chicago scene. Perhaps I live in a very atypical area where I can (in season) walk into a bottle shop and pick from Prof Fritz 1809, Bruery Hottenroth, Bells Oarsman, DFH Festina and Bahnhof Berliner. We also had the Lambicus version of Bahnhof's, Weyerbacher Zulu, Telegraph Reserve Wheat, Freigeist Abraxxxas (technically a Lichtenhainer) and Round Guys Berliner. Within a 2 hour drive, the following breweries have or had recently on tap a berliner:
Pizza Boy (multiple versions), Nodding Head, Iron Hill, Dock Street, Round Guys and Farmers Cabinet. During Philly beer week you try severel from Funky Buddha and maybe one from Cigar City.

Again, congrats to you guys for being the first to bottle a berliner in your area. Keep spreading the love (obligatory Flower child reference???)

I just bought two of these because of the threads here. Festina peche and 1809. I think it is a forgotten style because ti's not flamboyant or intensely fruity like an ipa. The tart fruit together with the brett can smell funky and funny to someone who is looking for sweet candy like beers. I think the style could really grow on you as it is light and wheaty with a liberated and clean palate.

Beat me to it. Not forgotten in Florida by any means. They have flavored syrups as well that they add. I think all the Florida breweries that are doing it are coining a new term..something like "floriner weiss"...someone else probably remembers, my memory is failing me.

Berliner is hardly forgotten, just under appreciated. The point was made that maybe people see it as dull compared to a DIPA. Sure, maybe, but I think most of us know that (good) beer becomes an obsession. You drink enough of the style that got you started, and you start to look for new things. Berliner is one of the styles that my non-beer drinking friends really like. It's a personal favorite to brew (and drink ;p) for the process alone. If anything, I think its on the come up. Stakem, thanks for bringing up FreiGeist, and Pipeworks, you rock! More cash for golden please!

Do you do a turbid mash to make a Berliner? I'd love to make one as it's a great style, and am wondering how necessary it is to do a turbid mash.

I have a log of Festina on tap right now (next to Harpoon Summer), and I can't stay away from it. It is my first time putting on a Berliner and I've got to say it is the perfect style for summer. Very few of the guests I've offered it to have appreciated it, so in the end it means more for me!

Brewers use lots of hops because that is what sells the best. They don't do it despite the public, they do it because of the public. Trust me, if hoppy pales could be sold with smaller hop bills to rave reviews, brewers would save the money in ingredients.

I personally am betting on Berliner Weisse to be one of the more popular styles for craft beer lovers in the near future.

Sloop Brewing opened up with four styles a year ago, one of them a Berliner Weisse, and of the four styles it is the Berliner Weisse that sells out the quickest despite it being the most expensive one.

Journalists, like all of us I am sure, look for the easiest way to do their jobs, no surprise here.

I tried my first Berliner Weiss (NG Thumbprint) last month and loved it. Since then, I've been able to try a few others (the CCB Guava one is amazing) and am using this thread as a starting point to finding other ones to try (probably picking up a PW Flower Child tonight.) Most non beer geeks that I've spoken to have never even heard of the style. Just because every person out there who drinks beer doesn't automatically know every style brewed and can rattle off a list of the five best examples doesn't detract from the style in the least bit. Is Berliner Weiss as popular as IPA? Of course not. But that doesn't mean that Berliner Weisses aren't the next big thing. It wasn't that long ago when you couldn't even get a decent saison in most bars and look at the market now. As the craft world expands, more styles will get their time in the limelight.

I prefer it, although have just done it with cultured lacto as well. But that takes some of the fun out in my opinion.
