Interesting story on Ohio Beer Blog about "Bernie Beer" being canned this week!

    http://www.ohio.com/blogs/the-beer-...bernie-beer-coming-this-week-in-cans-1.539901

    Bernie Kosar has been canned.
Bernie Beer — an American brown ale named after the Cleveland Browns legend — is being released this week for the first time in 12-ounce cans.
The brew previously has been available only on draft. Cellar Rats Brewery in Madison made the beer on contract under the name Hop View Brewing Co. for the Bernie Beer Co.
“It’s an easy-drinking wonderful brown ale — a little bit malty, finishes hoppy and finishes dry,” Cellar Rats spokesman Joel Sandrey said. “We’re very proud of what we’ve produced here.”
Bernie Beer is expected to be a year-round offering. Sandrey added that other Bernie seasonal brews are planned for release next year.

LAME. Craft beer is supposed to be about genuine products, not "backing in" to a brand based on a celebrity. Beer first, marketing second. I've talked to Bernie several times and he has NO clue about craft beer other than someone telling him he can make money on it. Hopefully this flops hard.

Please define genuine products and then please describe why this is not a genuine product.

Easily one of the worst beers I've ever had.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but is this much different than King Gose Home? Obviously Lebron is not explicitly referenced but we all know that's what it was. Not sure how I feel either way, but just posing the question. I know that Hoppin' Frog gets a lot more love than Cellar Rats.

I'll give you an example of each b/c there are shades of grey and this is just my opinion: people making beer because they love to drink or brew beer and make a good enough product to sell commercially - genuine! People making beer that exploits a celebrity or getting into the business because craft beer is "hot" - not genuine!

    The differences from my perspective:

    1) Hoppin' Frog is an established brewery. This isn't a Cellar Rats beer; it's a contract-brewed product for a new "brewery" called Bernie Beer Co. - a brewery whose namesake doesn't know jack shit about beer and has been told by others it's a profitable business to be in, thus he lent his name.

    2) Hoppin' Frog wanted to make a Gose (I first heard about it in the spring) and I believe it was on the brew schedule before the Lebron return; they simply re-branded the beer. It's still a gimmick, but comes from a brewery that has a track record of solid beers that don't all rely on gimmicks.

Forgot to add that I don't love the exploitation or gimmickry of King Goes Home either, but I do see some differences.

Understandable. I just wanted to pose the question for discussion's sake.

Doesn't exactly have the best "celebrity" backing either. He's a train wreck, no?

My thought? A gose from Hoppin' Frog trumps a brown ale from Cellar Rats.....celebrities aside....but yes, using local sports figures obviously helps add some "buzz" to both breweries beers....with the Browns the division leader now, I am sure they (Cellar Rats and Bernie) hope to tap into that....do I see anything wrong with either approach, not really....marketing is marketing....whether you put silly frogs all over your labels or get some prior sports hero to stick their name on a beer, if it is a decent beer, it will sell.

Also,I wouldn't say "Bernie Kosar is a train wreck".....he is still pretty well regarded by many in NE Ohio....what he knows about craft beer, I have no idea.

The eruption from the crowd when they showed Bernie on the scoreboard at the Cavs opener this year trumped the ovation Lebron got when he was introduced. Bernie is still highly revered in Cleveland.

Every Cellar Rats beer I've had was completely undrinkable. I have no idea how the hell they're still in business. Just putrid stuff.
