Maybe a crazy question for those who don't work shift work (or just nights) but for those who do - do you have a standard beer (or style) that you like to drink after a long night (and before you go to sleep)? I find that my palette is different. Some beers I normally enjoy do not taste good at 5:30AM (and vise-versa). I tend to like a combination of malty and hoppy before I go to sleep. I have some Lagunitas Little Sumpin Extra that really hits the spot. (Sucks is amazing when I can get it here) I also had a Southern Star Red Cockaded beer that hit the spot. I work rotation 12 hour shifts, so I'd love to hear from others who are in a similar position, and who could maybe suggest something to try. 5:30 may seem like an odd time to drink a beer, but not when you work shift work. Trust me! FYI - I'm in Texas.

Naturally someone should say coffee beers since you get the coffee flavor and no caffeine. 1-2 FBS would be me go to.

You know - I've never tried that. I've got a couple in my fridge. I'll have to try that tomorrow! Normally I don't care for coffee flavor beers. We'll see! Thanks.

I can only relate to my days as a plow truck driver but back then I would say anything cold always tasted great.

When I worked nights 9-7, a Sierra Nevada Porter at the end of the work night was always satisfying.

When I worked the night shift and got home at 6am, I would still drink the same as though I was working a 9-5 job. That's just me.

During my days working third shift as a security officer I did not drink beer so I missed out on the opportunity. But I would say a nice thick stout or a porter would probably be really good, but not too high an ABV so that you can drink it relatively fast and then get to sleep.

Some morning you should join in the What are you Drinking Now Thread when you get home. Ask the same question there while having your beer and I'm thinking you'll get several new ideas from folks currently working night time hours.

There is definitely some caffeine in coffee beers, not a lot per say, but it's there. I know a couple guys who are very sensitive to caffeine that can't drink coffee stout later than 9:00 without risk of being up till 3:00am. It's going to be different with every coffee beer, but AleSmith Speedway Stout seems to come up a lot in a lot of threads regarding keeping people up. Anyway, just my 2 cents, might want to give the coffee stouts a test run before ruining a good night (morning) sleep if you may be sensitive to caffeine.

Otherwise, if you're the guy who can drink a cup of coffee and sleep like a baby, then have at it! It'd be a great choice for a post-night shift style to try, and one of my personal favorites.
(note: I'm not sensitive to caffeine and have never noticed or been affected by it in a beer; just reporting here)

Are you sure about the "no caffeine" aspect of coffee beers? Do you have any supporting documentation? I ask because I've honestly wondered this myself (more for drinking them in the evening as a dessert beer before bed).

My natural inclination was to assume there is caffeine in them as they typically get their flavor from real coffee beans, which have caffeine in them.

Looks like I was beaten to the punch, but I'll post this anyway as neither of you provide hard facts, are there any either way? I know there are tables for "caffeine content" of different beverages, often broken down by brand of coffee (dunkin vs starbucks, for example) so I'd love to see a similar list for beers.

Insert foot in mouth. I should have phrased it as not as much as a standard cup. 0 hard facts. I just assumed the 8% ABV acting as a depressant overpowered what caffeine was in it.

I work a rotating shift and when I get off shift in the morning I usually just have a small glass of whatever homebrew I have in the keg, the key being SMALL glass anything more and it screws with my sleep when sleeping during the daytime. That said I really like a hoppy ipa with a couple fried eggs and toast:grinning:
