This. Exactly. Read for a half and hour and then I'm out. Sleep like a baby.

If I need to go to sleep soon after I get off (typical when I work nights), I drink no beer (or any alcohol) at all. Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but the fact is drinking any alcohol close to bedtime has an overall negative effect on a night's sleep. You will fall asleep faster, but quality of sleep will suffer; this has been proven in many studies (just Google "alcohol and sleep"). Plus, if I drink too close to bedtime, my girlfriend says I snore like a chainsaw (she even recorded it on her cell for me, because I was kind of doubting her) :slight_frown:. These days I just don't do "night caps", and if I do have a beer around bedtime, it's going to be around 5% ABV and 1+ hours away from the time my head hits the pillow: a porter, dark lager, APA, amber ale, or Pils works pretty nicely.

    I know, a fuddy-duddy answer but... Science.

I work graveyard shift exclusively and for me, I love a good porter or stout at the end of a work day when I do decide to have a beer. Porter and stouts tend to be my favorite styles of beer and since I usually have just one beer, why not make it a favorite?

Definitely FBS, but some other favorites are Rogue Hazelnut and Great Divide Yeti (Espresso was the best....no longer).

Just wrapped up a week of overnights and Sam Rebel was a great, no frills way to wind down each morning with some eggs

I too work graveyard, but I don't get home until like 9 or 9:30 in the morning. I've tried several styles this time of morning, but Imperial stouts seem to always hit the spot. May be the coffee thing like other BA's have suggested. FBS, KBS, Bomb, Black Note, Bible belt, Pirate bomb, Stone RIS, Ten Fidy... I've tried them all and no problem going right to sleep afterwards!

Many years ago, I used to work third shift (which as I recall was 11pm to 7 am). A couple friends and I would usually go to one of our houses and grill dinner every morning, so we would just have whatever would go with what we were eating. Usually we had something pretty light, like a pilsner or a pale ale just because they drink easily and go with a lot of food. The thing is, we kept our schedules so getting off at 7am was the same as getting off at 5pm. We didn't go to sleep for several more hours. It sounds like your schedule is different than that. I only mention this because if you are not in a hurry to get to sleep, it could change your outlook on the right beer. Working 12 hour shifts is different, though, so maybe that's not a reasonable idea.

Murphy's is my night shift beer. I think it is a mental thing with the dark color and subtle bitter/sweet aftertaste (shitty gas station cream and sugar coffee-ish).

When I was 3rd shift, I tended to stay away from drinking after work. But when I did, it was simply the first thing I grabbed in the fridge!

What ever was in the fridge. If I didn't have one or two most days it would take forever to get to sleep. Glad to be off that shift!

I've been working 3 overnight 12's for a couple months now and I definitely switch to the stronger, heavier beers on those days (mornings). Imp stouts, barleywines, scotch ales, DIPA's, old ales, anything strong and flavorful. Need to get to bed and there's no time to screw around with lighter beers, like Furious.

After a typical night, I usually prefer something light and hoppy like an APA or Pilsner (though Rebel IPA satisfies that desire pretty well)... After rougher nights at the brewery, I prefer something dark and strong to wind down.

When I would do the temporary overnight shifts, I would usually grab whatever was in the fridge to fall asleep. When I did it for a few months straight I would go either hoppy as hell or an RIS with my takeout breakfast platter. Hops go great with eggs and hot sauce
