Crooked Stave - Vieille is very good, however it's not a saison at all. It tastes 100% like a Gueuze. People looking for a saison will be put off by the sourness and the oak taste. Since Americans don't make gueuzes (yet) I guess they don't realize it's not a saison.

I agree that Tank 7 is very good, you can find it easily in Europe now. I find it more round, sweet and mellow than Belgian saisons who tend to be drier. America embraced the saison style like crazy, hopefully it'll push the Belgians to be at it again, Belgian saisons are quite rare on the market right now... There's Dupont, St Feuillien and Fantôme, that's about it...

Tired Hands Saison's are excellent. Magnify's Search Saison is also a fantastic brew.

Mystic puts out a bunch of great saisons. Renuad, Hazy Jane, and Mary of the Gael all stick out as some of my favorites that they brew.

might be my favorite. with Tired Hands stuff up there too, especially The Thing.

Southampton Cuvee des Fleurs out of the brewpub was great. Not sure what new bottles are like.

oops, but still qualifies as North American.

Hill Farmstead's Saisons are pretty hard to beat. Ommegang Hennepin is one of my all time fav beers. Recently I've bee digging OEC brewing in CT. They put out some really funky/freaking awesome stuff.

Tank 7 and Hennepin are my favorite American-made saisons, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned Off Color Apex Predator yet. Seriously, that's the closest anyone has come to Dupont in my opinion.

Also, Manor Hill Grisette is a great local option that's sessionable AND hoppy.

Quite a few people are saying "the closest to Dupont". But as a Frenchman who loves American beers because they do things differently or revive old styles with a twist, I'm certainly not expecting American saisons to "come close to Dupont". Dupont is Dupont, and it's still there, there's no point in doing the same thing, don't you think ?

When I think of American saisons, I think of slightly more tartness/fruitiness, and less spice...I could be off though

I am not saying that there is an American brewed Saison that matches Dupont but if a US brewery could brew this sort of beer and not price it at the exorbitant prices that are charged for Saison Dupont I would buy those beers.

    Cheers!

How much is a Saison Dupont over there in the US ? It's around 2 € here in France/Belgium. A Tank 7 is more like 5/6 €.

By the way, Upright Flora Rustica is now available in France. Any thoughts ? It's 16 € for a 75 cl.

    At my local beer stores:

    · Saison Dupont 750 ml is about $15 (about 14 €)

    · Saison Dupont 4-pack of 11.2 oz is about $25 (about 23 €)

    Cheers!

Damn that's expensive. But again, I remember buying a Rochefort 10 in Melbourne Australia for about 14 $, while it's less than 5 € in Europe.

Hill Farmstead has the style nailed. They all are good but Soigne and Sarrasin are my favorites.

    Tell me about it.:slight_frown:

I can't remember the last time I bought a bottle of Saison Dupont because of the high price.

Non-Cheers to Saison Dupont prices in the US!

I love saisons, but damn do I hate the bubble guts that come afterwards. Anyone have a remedy for this? Also, are Funkwerks's offerings - Saison and Tropic King - easily obtainable in a simple trade?

I am not a medical doctor but there is a chance that you are 'reacting' to the live yeast of bottle conditioned beer. Maybe if you find a Saison that is filtered and not bottle conditioned that would be a better beer for you to drink?

    Cheers!

    Prairie 'Merica
Saint Somewhere Saison Athene (when fresh)
    Bruery Saison Rue
    Logsdon's Seizoen Bretta
    Anchorage/Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Boreal
    Crooked Stave Surett
    Wicked Weed TakeTake
Sixpoint Harbinger (was a one-off but I still remember how delicious it was)
And, as for dark saisons, Jolly Pumpkin Baudelaire IO and Goose Island Pepe Nero are excellent

I've only ever had tastes of Anna and Arthur at bottle shares. Thought they were both outstanding but I can't in good conscience add them to my list without having full pours
