I wouldn't say insanely bitter at all. Fresh, it's insanely bitter, 6 to 7 years it still carries bitterness, but it's way, way muted and the dark matly fruits are the main flavors. I have a vertical going for the past 7 years and drink a few each year, so I feel I can comment on Bigfoot aging.

My vote is for Sucaba/Abacus, so good when fresh.

American: Anchor Foghorn, Central Waters BBB, DFH-Olde School (probably gonna be alone on this one).

English: Flying Dog-Horn Dog, JW Lees (might be alone on this one as well), Weyerbacher-Insanity.

Sucaba is amazing, but it needs some time on it IMO.

It's in there somewhere, maybe a couple times. I'm just seconding (thirding?) it.

I might be in the minority here, but I thought Deschutes class of 88 was outstanding fresh. a little unconventional, but really tasty

I like almost all of them with a little time, but Brooklyn Monster, Horn Dog, and Bigfoot are all fine on day #1.
Even all-stars like Sucaba and the 2012 Bligh's benefit from a few months of age.

What's the verdict on whether Founders Bolt Cutter is better fresh, or aged?

Most barleywines out there are seasonal, so if you're looking for freshness do your homework first.

If you consider 4 months "aged," than in my humble opinion, it was better with some age. It was far less disjointed and the maple and hops not as dominant. The maple is already fading, but more time for the hops to mellow might bring it back.

That reminds me, it's about time for me to open another one of those this weekend. I'll let you know.
