It’s worth adding though - some industry sources do consider “craft” and “domestic” two separate categories. Depending on your age, you might recall how you’d frequently see Sam Adams listed in the “imports” column on a restaurant menu . Domestic beer can sometimes only mean BMC. I’m assuming that the article here is not using the word that way. The whole thing is a bit odd. Even odder is why the price of an imported beer is considered irrelevant to the authors in determining a great beer city.

Yep, I'm old enough to remember those days . An import list containing Molson or Labatt's, Beck's or Heineken, and Sam Adams, maybe Heineken dark.

Disregarding import prices didn't make sense to me either.
The top selling 2018 imports were
    https://www.statista.com/statistics/188728/top-imported-beer-brands-in-the-united-states/
    Sales in million U.S. dollars
    Corona 2,370.45
    Modelo 1,974.8
    Heineken 794.78
    Dos Equis XX 382.85
    Stella Artois 367.76
    Tecate 202.32
    Labatt 152.25
    Guinness 144.03
    Pacifico 125.18
    Fosters 75.05

None of which are priced high enough to skew the results

I'm a mad homer, but the PNW deserves the nod more than here. Those guys keep it on the DL, but I would give my left one for some of the stuff coming from there to be local.

There are already 2 Oregon cities on the list, Bend and Portland

I will try back to get back on thread.

I am mystified about some of the choices but Asheville (yes my state) makes sense as it is a great place to visit and beer has become quite the draw. Shoot, the Sierra Nevada Mills River facility is reason enough but add in 30 -40 breweries, mountains, small mouth fishing, eclectic vibe, rapidly evolving food scene in a fairly small tidy package, what is there not to like?

Well, with minor details changed, you've just described Bend and Bellingham as well. All 3 are roughly the same population, and have similar attitudes and vibes.

I live in Canada but found this interesting, particularly the average pint price, which seems very reasonable, even after I do the conversion to Canadian dollars. I notice the average pint price data comes from Numbeo, which I have used a great deal over the years for prices on various items. Not sure who is aware of this site, but it might be helpful to some. It’s called Pint Price. Link below. Cheers.

In American terms, Asheville is an older city. It's very like a smaller and tighter version of my home Greensboro. Both have strong O.Henry connections and similar older architecture. We are fortunate to have held on to these treasures.

Duluth! Go in the summer. All the breweries are within a mile or two of each other. And you can get all the great Minneapolis beer up there. Get a hotel close by and you never have to drive

Ashville also has a massive Libertarian/free thinker population that doesn't embrace either major party. I had a lot of fun there.

It's been my experience that just about everywhere has a fair number of "no thinkers". It has also been my experience that they are pretty well spread across the political spectrum.

What is a "no thinker?" That doesn't sound like anything good.

I like Asheville because of the beers available, but I love Asheville because of the food and things to do. It’s a foodie paradise, but I’ve said it 100 times the beers and breweries are imo mostly average kinda beers. I’d pull Burial out of that mix, imo they make great beers in many styles, and I’ve never been to the Funkitorium, just not my kinda beers. It’s a tickers paradise as well, you can tick yourself silly very easily. It’s a liberal city, a college town, a tad of a throwback to the 60s perhaps. If your close it’s a must stop, it’s unfortunately a very expensive place to visit too. Actually Charlotte is also a great beer city, lots of breweries in many styles. Raleigh has a lot of breweries, but I’ve never ever been there and it’s only an hour plus away.

I guess what I meant is Asheville has an eclectic mix of old town folks, college town, major hippie contingent (was there visiting and there was a right to be naked demonstration) and despite all the conservative/liberal/libertarian contingents, my impression is that most folks tend to not think much about much.

Guess should have said that it has always seemed to me that a lot of the people you run into don't give two sh@#s about politics etc and just drink beer.

I bet the hippie fest they throw in the summer is a hoot. Can’t remember what it’s called, I think it’s french or something like it.

Wow, Arizona did not even make the list, we have close to 100 breweries and have warm, beer drinking weather, year round. Well off to get a beer, going to be in 60s today lol.

Because beer in Arizona is too expensive? They do not meet the article's criteria for "average price for a pint of domestic beer in each city"?

    Cheers!
