I'm drinking a Trillium Fort Point Pale Ale right now, and dammit, this is how a real beer should taste. That said, I always go back to Ipswich for great taste that changed my view of beer some decades back. Their Original Ale, Oatmeal Stout and IPA are still top shelf. And I'll settle in with Guinness at my local now and again.

    Reissdorf Kolsch is lovely...

... but I almost feel guilty mentioning it in this German-centric thread.

You're confusing "standards" with "highest rated."

To each their own. Old Raspy is hoppier than most in the style, too hoppy to be representative of the style IMO.

Westmalle is more of a "classic" in terms of name value, and is a very well done beer, but La Fin Du Monde is the epitome of the Tripel style for me.

I've had higher rated English Barleywines than MoAS, but I think MoAS pulls of the intricacies and depth of flavors better than any other EB I've had. Stand by my statement. Curious as to what your choice for EB would be. See your point that highest rated are all barrel aged though.

I had a beer mug full of this just a few weekends ago. It's everything beer, and no extra frills or thrills. Absolutely delicious.

Amber/red ales seem to always taste just like beer, no more and no less. Which is why every now and then I like to take a break from IPAs and Belgian ales with a few Fat Tires or Ska Pinstripe Reds.

Nugget Nectar is always the beer that comes to mind for me as a balance between all ingredients involved.

For a year-round release, my "fridge beer" is SN Nooner so that would get my vote.

Maybe I don't drink enough barrel-aged or adjunct-laden beers, but aside from my large stockpile of lambics, I'd say 99% of the beers I drink are "beer-flavored" beer. We also have this newfangled thing here called cask ale...not sure if you would consider that beer-flavored or not.

When I open my fridge I usually reach for a beer, not chocolate cake, or a fruit smoothie, or maple butter tarts. To me, the beeriest beer style is a pale lager. Hofbrau Original is hitting the spot right now, but it is my only fresh Munich Helles option.

@Lurchus I guess you could argue that given the enormous range of flavours possible in beer, there is no token profile for beer. But I think that if you average all beer profiles and omit regional specialties that have very unique recipes, you are left with a beerish beer.

You would have slightly kilned pale-amber barley-malt, exclusively saccharomyces (top or bottom fermenting), hops with an alpha:beta ratio close to 1:1 and a balance in the essential oils Myrcene, Humulene, Carophyllene and Farnesene, attenuation around 70-80%, and an abv between 4-6%.

Most of the above examples won't taste much like beer to the poor fellow who wants his beer to taste like beer. It has to be a proper bitter, without any of those weird American hops.

Just add Brett C. and use only English hops in every English style beer and you will have how they are supposed to taste. Of course, that isn't how we like them now, that is how they liked them in another time and another place.

Beer is supposed to taste how folks like it today and here. Beer flavored beer is a nonsensical idea if looked at any other way.

So I guess AAL and IPA are how beer is supposed to taste in America now, and I guess the most popular would also define it, so Budweiser and Two Hearted Ale are the obvious choices.
