DISCLAIMER: I don't want to know what your favorite beer is.

The other day I was having a conversation with my brother in law (who is not really into beer) about great beer. He recently was over seas and was able to bring me back a Westy 12 brick, and I gave him 1 as a thank you. I told him it was " ARGUABLY" one of the best beers in the world. So he asked, what beer can challenge it. I told him Pliny and Heady (even though I haven't had them, it is obvious a lot of people think very highly of them), along with a few others. So my question is, when you have a "best beer in the world" conversation, what beers do you feel must be in the conversation, even if you haven't had them?

Even though a lot of people think very highly of them, at the very least you should include beers from other parts of the world.
To directly answer the question: Courage Imperial Russian stout. The old one.

Did you not ask for opinions of best world beers?
    Didn't like my answer?

Better question, what's the best beer in the world 35 years from now? What someone might think should be considered for the best beer in the world, might taste like dog shit to another person. Its a very subjective topic.

Agreed, but when talking to a noob, like I was, I felt like I needed to give him a number of beers that had a very high opinion by many.

In that case it's probably best to briefly discuss styles, and maybe then get into superior exemplars of each style. Honestly, there is no 'Best Beer'- the field is way too broad.

Best beer in the world is a ridiculous statement or debate or sentiment. Best beer in a particular style, while still a fruitless argument/debate, is more appropriate. At least you are comparing things with more similar characteristics.

If someone wants something to compare to Westy 12, have them try Rochefort 10 or St. Bernardus Abt. They are different, but have some common characteristics: big and bold, sweet, dark dried fruits, etc. I prefer Rochefort, personally.

Also, I don't think there are beers that stand out above and beyond all others in a particular style. I do have favorites within a style, but there are at least some others that approach the quality IMO.

Asking the best beer in the world is trying to ask me who's the hottest woman or whatever. How am I supposed to know, they could be anywhere in the world and maybe only a couple dozen of people have had them to attest to their awesomeness. Yeah, I'm still talking about the hot girl in that sentence too.

There is no answer, your tastes change so often and if the harvest is bad one year it completely changes the flavor (in my opinion) but my always go to is Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro

No such animal as best beer in the world. You could ask about the most sought after beer in the world, the hardest to obtain beer in the world, your favorite beer of a style, but since all of our palates are different and changing, the best beer in the world is a myth.

All things considered, Westvleteren 12 does make a hell of a case for the title.

That said, Narke Kaggen! Stormaktsporter demands inclusion in the conversation.

The best beer in the world is the beer I'm drinking right now. Currently that's Obsidian Stout.
