Hi BAs, So I live in a typical small NYC apartment, it's also a 5th floor walk-up. I am looking into purchasing a reasonably priced beer fridge. My roommates likes beer, but isn't a beer geek, and although he'll have a 6 pack of beer or 2 in our regular refrigerator, my beer "habit" sometimes takes up almost all of the space we have in the fridge, which he doesn't appreciate. I have looked online and saw mini-fridges that can hold 120 cans, which is nice, but I also age some bottled beers that wouldn't fit in there (yes, I age beers in a normal fridge, I don't have the space or temp control to cellar them properly, better cold than very warm). Anyway, if you have any suggestions, let me know, please send links to buy, also photos would help great. Thanks!
I have a Danby wine fridge that is temp-contorlled and depending how I configure things I can git anywhere from 30-60 bottles.
Thanks for your response. I'll look up Danby wine fridges, but curious, does it fit the bottles in upright or on their sides? most people would say that it's important to store beer upright. If you keep yours on its side, how do you think it affects them, if at all? and do you age any beers for 1-4 years in there?
It has to removable shelfs. I have mostly large format bottles in it upright (lambics), which is why I've only got about 30 bottles in it right now. When I had a mix of large and small it was closer closer to 60. If you're doing all small format, you can use all three shelves.
Is there any way you can send a link to the model you have? All the Danby fridges that are wine fridges have the racks to hold wine bottles horizontally.
The racks are horizontal, but they are removable. Mine kind of looks like this, but the racks are different. Mine is about 5 years old - it's a Danby Millennium. http://www.winecoolerdirect.com/danby-35-bottle-freestanding-wine-cooler/DWC350BLPA.html
Sorry to threadjack but regarding those danby's do the clear doors block uv/light? Pretty much anywhere I could put that in my place would be exposed to a lot of natural light.
I have a Danby and I love it. The shelves are easily moved around to adjust to whatever sized bottles or cans you want to put in it. No need for an external temp controller. The temp controller built into the fridge keeps it at a steady 50-55 (whichever I decide to set it to) Bought mine at Walmart but I've included the Amazon link below. edit: in response to UV question, the door has black lines through the glass, assuming this is the UV protection. Not sure what else it would be. Danby DBC120BLS Beverage Center - Stainless Steel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002MPLYEW/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_lkVbwb3HE046A
you can also paint the glass from the inside with black paint or use some other coating to block light if it is a concern. Cheers.
Window film from Home Depot, Lowes, etc, will provide UV protection. It has the added benefit of being easy to install.
I am looking to buy a mini fridge to store all my 16oz canned hoppy beers as my current (full sized) fridge has reached it's capacity (as has my wife's tolerance.) I live in a Brooklyn apartment, so a mini fridge seems like the best solution. I can put it in our 2nd bedroom. Thinking I can probably get a good deal with a lot of Black Friday sales going on over the next few days. Anyone have any suggestions for make and models? About how many 16oz cans will these fridges hold? Looking primarily for sheer capacity. I don't need any fancy bells and whistles other than keeping as many cans as possible cold and fresh tasting. Cheers!
