Hello, I am traveling to Berlin in early October and would love some recommendations on really good beer bars/halls and breweries to visit while I'm there. I won't be traveling outside of Berlin, so I'm hoping to keep my visits to Berlin-only spots. Thanks in advance for your help! mpak
A search through the "places" listed on BA should cover everything unless there are some new places that haven't made it in yet. I'll recommend the Wirsthaus Nußbaum (Bundesplatz 5) for it's authentic antique charm and 18 taps, as well as the rebuilt Zum Nußbaum (Am Nussbaum 3) although there's not as much beer there. It's cool to see though, and just up the street from the Brauhaus Georgbräu which might make it a worthwhile trip. To the south there are a bunch of places in the Kreuzberg area including Brauhaus Südstern, Heidenpeters, Hopfenreich, and Bierkombinat Kreuzberg. I'll also admit to enjoying the Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt although you'll only find Augustiner beers that you've probably already had there. Others: Eschenbräu, Hops & Barley, and Vagabund. Also a trip to Berlin is not complete without a visit to the KaDeWe (2nd largest department store in the world) so check out their bottle selection but remember their prices are higher than you'll find elsewhere, and be sure to have a brat and a beer while you're there.
The question with Berlin is always, what are you after, traditional beer experiences or modern craft? In Berlin, those 2 seem, sadly, to be paralell universes at this point. This might be a good starting point when you are after "craft": http://www.lieblingsbier.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Ubahn-Map-berlin_V1.1June-Kopie.jpg Heidenpeters & Hops and Barley are my favorite places for more modern stuff, though the latter also makes reasonable classic styles, but still has a more modern, "hip" feel. I am personally not a fan of Hopfenreich at all. But that depends on taste. No appropiate Glasware, lots of samey IPAs on tap...
I recommend that you read this thread: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/going-to-berlin-tips.396296/#post-4606806 Cheers!
check out a few of these places for a good time/nice people but limited beer choice http://www.schultheiss.de/kiezkneipe/highlights-2015/kiezkneipenwahl
What kind of beer do you usually like? I'd definitely second Heidenpeters and Vagabund. BKK is cool in the sense that it's a bit of German craft beer history - certainly the first place I was able to track down anything remotely hoppy on tap in the country, but it's pretty damn smoke filled, and definitely a bit schizo in its relation to craft beer.
I've not been there yet, but Birra is now open. Owned by the same guy who owns and operates Ma Che in Rome. Specializes in Italian craft beer, so that may not be what you're looking for, but I would certainly go given the quality of Ma Che in Rome.
I put the results of my July trip to Berlin at www.BeerGuideBER.com -- didn't make it to all the places I wanted to so I'm heading back in December...
