I'm traveling to Richmond tomorrow, and am wondering which place in Richmond has the best combination of price/selection/service? Right now, I'm stuck between the Total Wine, Once Upon a Vine, and both Corks & Kegs locations.

I was traveling a couple weeks ago and went through Richmond. I had to pick one store in Richmond, since my girlfriend was annoyed with my constant beer search our entire trip. I ended up choosing once upon a vine through recommendation on the forums here. I was more than happy with their price and selection. Tons of maharaja.

Corks and Kegs only has one location, but Vine has two (Northside and Southside). Service at TW kind sucks, but their prices are great. C&K has good prices and a good selection. I would choose Vine North, but I'm biased as its the store I live closest too. Vine south usually has great selection as well.

I usually stop at Once Upon a Vine North when I'm heading through the city. They have a great selection, but admittedly it's my stop of choice mainly because it's right off of I-95 and easy to get to.

    Thanks, guys.

I went to both Corks and Kegs, and the Richmond TW. The guy running Corks and Kegs knew his stuff fairly well, while the one girl I talked to at TW...notsomuch. Ultimately, I feel I made the right move - C&K for the big bottles (got a 5% discount for 6) and TW for the mixed 6 packs.

yeah, I only hit Total Wine for when I want a mix-a-6 but do my regular shopping at Vine North and C&K.
and of course Whole Foods for my growler needs...

I'm going to be staying in Short Pump. I'm obviously hitting up Hardywood on Saturday afternoon.

So Corks & Kegs is the spot to go for the good bombers?

Any good beer bars in my area?

Actually, I'd reckon Once Upon a Vine is a better store. Corks & Kegs has a decent selection and is closer to where you're staying at, but Once Upon a Vine is excellent as long as you don't mind traveling a bit farther. And if all else fails, there's a Total Wine close to you, also. :stuck_out_tongue:

And for bars? Mekong is in Henrico, and it's supposed to be really freaking fantastic.

If you're already in Short Pump check out the Whole Foods. Very good bottle selection and they have a couple rotating drafts that you can get a pint there or fill a growler.

There is also a Capital Ale House in Innsbrook, just on the other side of 64 from Short Pump.

echoing Whole Foods (which actually has eight taps), Mekong (which has fifty), and Once Upon a Vine (which is very close to Hardywood). C&K has a great selection of large-format Belgian stuff, but if you're only gonna hit up one place, i'd go with OUaV. if you go to Capital Ale House, don't be surprised if the first five things you want to drink are out, that seems sadly typical of my experiences. since you're already out in Short Pump, you could also check out Midnight in Goochland, but i can't say i'm a particular fan.

I just looked up Midnight in Goochland and found that it was in Rockville, VA... That's where the wedding is! Will definitely check that out.

I'll hopefully get over to Mekong and OUaV too.. Thanks for all the suggestions!

they occasionally have the rare treat. if I remember correctly, last year they pulled out a case of KBS months after it had come/gone through town...

what ncaudle said. also, if you're going to be over that way, Commerical Taphouse is pretty awesome if you want solid pub food and good beer.

probably too late for this post, but Strawberry St and Trolley Market (both somewhat close to each other) always surprise me with tasty treats.
Shield's Market (so so close to Strawberry) will surprise you, as well.
