I work with someone that has relatives in NY, not sure exactly where, but would like to help him find quality beers from NY. He is new to craft beer and am looking to give him a list of must tries from the area.

Can anyone recommend beers or breweries he should ask his family to send home?

    Thanks for the help.

NY is a huge place. Location would be helpful since not everything gets distributed around.

But off the top of my head: Other Half, Singlecut, Finback, Grimm, Transmitter, Brooklyn Brewery, Capt Lawrence, Sixpoint, Kelso, Ithaca, Keegan, Third Rail, Ommegang...

Here's a good list of NY breweries as well:

Southern Tier can't be left out. Their blackwater series is amazing.

Barrier and Peekskill come to mind: You might be able to seek out Barrier bottles, and they might start to can "Money." I don't think Peekskill bottles, but should be able to find them on tap (e.g. Eastern Standard IPA).

The old school "Southampton RIS" is not to be missed, if you can find it, among many of their other offerings

If you're into Nano Breweries, then check out Big Alice

I just had a bottle of Barrier's Archibald English Barleywine the other day - really great, worth seeking out - even though its not an IPA! Speaking of IPAs I love everything from Barrier but I prefer other IPAs from them but Money gets all of the credit. Dunegrass DIPA, Ruckus and the new Atypical are more my style.

Greenport Harbor just started their own bottling line. I think they have 4 beers in six packs. Otherside IPA is really good and the Black Duck Porter is one of my favorite porters.

If he is in California, I would suggest he start with a lot of the great beer they have. But New York has a lot of great beer too. Knowing where in NY his relatives will help.

Yeah I love my locals here in NY but anyone should be pretty well taken care of if they are living in CA. Better off making a tour of the new breweries when visiting relatives.

You can find Barrier bottles here; unless they sell out by the time you click on the link:

"Money" cans is just a rumor, but hell so was "Green Diamonds" for the longest time...

His family is from Orange County. I have shared several Cali beers with him. I'm trying to get him on this site to venture out. I was telling him about a beer from Brooklyn brewery and so he called his sister to see if she would send him some beer. I am trying to get a list of beers that she may be able to grab and send.

    I appreciate everyone's help.

Sorry if this is unhelpful, but this seems like a strange way to go about it. Why inconvenience his family and add shipping costs to the beer... just to introduce him to beer he can't get again? It would be great to just go to a store in California with the guy and put that money and energy into getting more beer from what's actually available to him. Seems much more productive to me. You can't be hurtin' for good beer out there. There are a few really nice breweries around Orange County, but they are brewpubs and small operations that wouldn't make much sense for you. Almost all of the responses you are getting here are more of the same.

I wish I had relatives in other states send me beer I couldn't get here in NY!

Six Point, Capt. Lawrence, Ithaca and Southern Tier are great...

So he's new to craft beer, lives in California(arguably the best beer state in the U.S.), and you want to help him find beers from NY? Not that there's anything wrong with NY beer, we've come a long way in the past few years. It just doesn't make sense to me. He should be trying everything he can get his hands on locally first and then start trading. With the stuff he has access to in Cali, he would have no problem trading for pretty much anything from NY.

It's not that he hasn't had beer from Cali. I have given him several beers from big Brewers here. He brought up to me that his sister could get him stuff as well from NY so he wanted to know what was worth getting.

I do appreciate all the help that everyone has given. Thanks.

As been mentioned there are several really good local places in the Orange County/Hudson Valley, but most of them do not can or bottle. Ones that come to mind that do are: Rushing Duck (some special releases are bottled, rest are draft only), Newburgh (canned its cream ale), Sloop, Keegan and Andean/Kuka (had their golden ale last night which I thought was decent, have their triple in the fridge). There could be others, but I haven't been to a lot of the newer places yet.

Then as been mentioned for NY in general: Sixpoint, Capt. Lawrence, Southern Tier, Ommegang, etc.

Recently I've been enjoying Bronx Rye Pale Ale, which comes in cans.

I would say by far the best and most interesting NY beers are not available in cans or bottles for the most part. It really is a vibrant local scene, which I think is great.

There are 200 breweries and growing in New York State. 75 or more of which are in Central New York state. Google Fingerlakes Beer Trail for a sampling of what is here.
