Hello Portland beer lovers. I'm from Melbourne, Australia. I'm visiting in November. I know Oregon is IPA crazy but my taste leans to stouts, particularly imperials. Any recommendations for places to try? Thanks!

you will be able to find endless amounts of stouts/strong ales in bottle form at any of the 20+ bottle shops and high end markets (that have good beer buyers) in and around Portland. Both local and import/out of state.

In November, pretty much every beer bar will have at least 2-3 stouts on tap if not 5+ .

If you are looking to spend some coin on some vintage barrel aged stuff, here are a few places....

Hair of the Dog - Large vintage collection of BA strong ales / stouts for on-site consumption. They also have a BA tap every day that rotates.

Apex - Price gouging for sure, but they will have a bottle list available (on-site or to-go) that could probably knock off a good chunk of your whale list (if you keep such a thing)

Deschutes usually has a release around November as well. Abyss? If not, they tend to carry a lot of their vintage stouts in bottles for purchase.

keep an eye on the NW forum..... we tend to share information freely and dont hoard stuff from each other. you wont find any trouble getting as much stouts as your liver can handle

Can't add much to derftron's excellent advice.

In terms of bars, it's really a matter of timing. Places that I have found that often have a great selection of stouts and strong ales on tap include Tin Bucket, Beer Mongers, Belmont Station Roscoe's, Bailey's and Beer O'clock. But that doesn't mean some random bar like NW Growlers, Saraveza, Arch Bridge or Concordia alehouse might have some special event where they do a BA Stout tap takeover that might (temporarily at least) better any other spot in town.

A lot of places in Portland keep online tap lists that are usually pretty current, so it probably wouldn't hurt to run through the top rated bars and taphouses websites when you get into town to see what's on offer around town.

    Good luck!

Download the BrewNotice app. Portland is well represented.

I'm tempted to take a piss on this with you being an Aussie and all but that should wait until a shared proper pint  I hope you have a great visit and I can't top the recommendations of the masters here, but, if you can't make it to Seattle, then while in Portland, do prioritize Hair Of The Dog and Deschutes. Many choices but you won't go wrong starting at the beginning of the story in Portland...their game is strong.
